Did You Know?:
It is impossible to hum while holding your nose?

It is because when you hum, you are actually exhaling, so if both your mouth and your nose is closed, the air can’t escape. So, although you can hum for a very brief few second or two, you will be forced to open your mouth and catch your breath. AND I bet you tried this!!!!! Lol

These are my Kindergarten students setting up for lunch. They set up tables, get chairs, and put out placemats.

 

He is working on the Blue Triangles found in the Sensorial area. The purpose is to show the “constructive power” (or analyzing power) of the triangle by exploring all possible shapes using only two triangles. Preparation for geometry: to show that all plane figures constructed with straight lines are composed of triangles.

Did You Know? (Yellow Stop Signs, are you kidding me?):
In 1922, the American Association of State Highway Officials met to determine a standard design for stop signs, and that’s where they decided on the color—yellow. Wait, what? Yes, according to Business Insider, because they thought that yellow would grab drivers’ attention. They’d also considered red, but there was no dye available at the time that wouldn’t eventually fade. By 1954, however, sign makers had access to fade-resistant porcelain enamel, and could finally start making stop signs the red color we recognize today.

Peek In The Classroom:

Ms. Emily, our high school intern reads to a couple of boys. Emily’s time with us is winding down.

 

These students are raking turns walking in the maze. One of the most popular extension works is making the Maze with the Red Rods. Using a laminated card that shows the picture of The Maze, the children build a winding path that uses the longest rods first and then the smallest rods to make the interior. The students have to use visual discrimination skills to decide where the rods need to be placed in order to make The Maze work. Once completed, the children may quietly take off their shoes and walk inside The Maze taking careful steps to ensure that they do not bump a Red Rod out of place. Taking turns and waiting patiently are also important parts of doing this work cooperatively with a classmate, as only one child at a time is allowed inside The Maze.

 

This girl is sewing. Sewing is a wonderful Montessori practical life activity. Not only is it great for developing skills such as fine-motor coordination and concentration, but many sewing projects have added value as “real work” projects children can complete.

 

These students are working together “setting a table” activity. Setting up the table for a meal is an easy job for children to accomplish. If you model how to do the job and have all the things easily accessible, children will quickly take over how to do this themselves. Some people like to use template mats to show younger children where to place things. For example, with an outline of a fork, spoon, knife, and bowl/ plate.

Just working on International Festival stuff.  We went over the continents of North and South America.  We learned about different cultures, food, and traditions about different countries in both of these continents. 

She is so proud of her coloring skills and coloring each state the same colors as the Puzzle Map. Can I say “color” anymore times in this caption?

 

Did You Know? (No Melanoma Poisoning!):
Eating veggies has plenty of health benefits, but it also has cosmetic ones, according to researchers at Leeds University and the University at St. Andrews. They found that those who consumed vegetables with high levels of red and yellow pigments had a healthy yellow glow compared to those who did not. This is due to a process called “carotenoid colorization.”

She is working on the Ten Board. The purpose of the Montessori Tens Board with Beads, also called Seguin Board B or Seguin Board 2 teaches a child (3-5 yo approx.) to associate the quantities and symbols from 10 to 90. Using the Tens Boards, the child explores the number names of the tens and the sequence of numbers 11–99. ******* Notice her pattern she created *******

 

She is working on beginning consonant blends. Research has found that good readers know the letter sounds and know how to separate and blend the sounds in a word. The ability to hear and separate individual sounds within a word (phonemic awareness), and then to blend those sounds into a word, is basic to reading and spelling.

 

She is working on the First Introduction To Decimals. In the Decimal System, the children first explore the golden bead materials sensorially. They learn from concrete to abstract, combining the golden beads with the abstract color coded numerals, building their association of quantity and symbol.

Peek In The Classroom:

He is working on the Vowel Tree. The Vowel Tree is a tactile, engaging way to teach and practice decoding words. This manipulative can be used with beginning readers to more advanced readers. Originally developed as a Montessori material, the vowel tree reinforces skills for all learners; tactile learners, auditory learners.  AND we have some vowel fatigue.

 

She is combining several works to help her recognize the symbol/number and the corresponding quantity.

 

She is working on the Continent Globe and the Continent puzzle Map. Starting with the map of the world and progressing through continents and then countries, the puzzle maps showcase the difference between land and water, and help to develop an appreciation for spatial awareness.

 

He is working on the Construction Boxes The aim is to show the child that by joining together different triangles, 4 sided figures are formed and to prepare the child for later work in geometry. Level of Parent Involvement: Medium during the initial presentation then low once the child has been shown and can work independently.

Line Time:
This week we took a look at life cycles of humans, frogs/toads, and butterflies/moths.  Humans have relatively boring life cycle compared to the butterfly/moth and toa d/frog.  As humans we are born, we live, we die. YAWWWWN.  The toad and frog start with being jelly eggs in the water.  They hatch into tadpoles and eat algae, then they turn into a froglet which has a head of a frog and a tail.  Then the tail falls off and an adult frog/toad lives the rest of its life on land.  The butterfly/moth starts as an egg.  The a caterpillar is hatched and it eats A LOT.  Then a caterpillar spins its (butterfly) chrysalis/ moth spins a cocoon.  Then a buttery comes out of its chrysalis and moth comes out of the cocoon.  I posed the question  “which came first the egg or the butterfly?”  This created some heated conversation!

     

 

 

Did You Know? (Don’t Listen To What Your Mother Said):
Although chewing gum is designed to be chewed and not swallowed, it generally isn’t harmful if swallowed.  If you swallow gum, it’s true that your body can NOT digest it. But the gum doesn’t stay in your stomach. It moves relatively intact through your digestive system and is excreted in your stool.  Did your mom tell you it would take seven years to digest?  Mine did.

Below is the gum where the flavor lasts a whole eight seconds. I also thought it says “vapes” in action.

He is learning how to create different shapes with triangles. he also learned the terms of Equilaterall Triangle (all sides equal) Isosceles Triangle (2 sides equal, and Scalene Triangle (no sides equal)

We had fun this week looking into the world of art.   We went over the primary and secondary colors.  We learned there are different ways to create art such as, drawing with pencils, coloring with crayons, and painting.  We looked at artists such as Michael Angelo, Pablo Picasso, Monet, and Andy Warhol.

In a song in 2004, and later in an interview in 2017, Cookie Monster revealed that his real name is Sidney Monster.  He is best known for his voracious appetite and his famous eating catchphrases, such as “Me want cookie!” Although he eats almost anything, including normally inedible objects, as his name suggests, his preferred food is cookies. Peek In The Classroom:

This material is the Movable Alphabet (cursive). The key purpose of the Moveable Alphabet is to prepare children for writing, reading, and spelling. The child’s use of the material progresses from single words, to phrases, and eventually to stories. In this way, the Moveable Alphabet teaches children how to symbolize their own thoughts, and begin to write creatively.

 

She is working on Color Box 2. The main purpose of the Colour Box is to develop a child’s visual sense of colour. Primary colours (Red, Yellow and Blue) are introduced in Colour Box 1, which is first presented to a child at 2.5 to 3 years of age. Colour Boxes 2 and 3 add more tablets to the mix, expanding a child’s colour knowledge.

 

He is working on the 45 Layout. This layout will help your child to visualize and develop an understanding of place value, order of numbers, and concentration. This work is very large and can take some time. Our children loved building this chart, and sometimes in stages. It can take time to build the concentration to complete the entire layout.

 

She is working g on the Trinomial Cube which is found in the Sensorial area, The direct purpose of the binomial and trinomial cubes is for the child to practice the steps to properly disassemble and build the cube, while refining dexterity and visual accuracy.

Happy March Everyone!

I am so excited that spring is just around the corner. We celebrated our first week of March with celebrating wonderful Dr. Seuss.  We had the best time wearing silly socks, wearing crazy clothes and hair, wearing their favorite hat, wearing mustaches  Wow! what a fun week.

   
 

 

Hibernation- During hibernation, an animal’s body temperature, heart rate, breathing, and other metabolic activities slow down significantly in order to conserve energy. While resources are scarce, hibernation allows animals like bears, chipmunks, and bats to use their stored energy much more slowly. Or when Mr. John is on Christmas Break!

 

Migration- A seasonal movement of animals from one region to another. Such as birds flying south for the winter.  Like people who move to Florida for the winter, hehe.

 

Adaptation- A change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment. We did an experiment where we dipped our hands in cold water then dipped them again in cold water with butter protecting our hands

 

A experiment about Adaptation. We recreated blubber of animals. Hands were put in ice water (naked) and a hand was put in after in a bag of butter (blubber). The children discovered quickly the difference between cold and warm.

 

Did you know (It’s Impossible to Hum While You Hold Your Nose?)
You can not hum while holding your nose for the same reason you can’t exhale while holding your nose and closing your mouth—to make the humming noise you have to pass air through your larynx. You can’t do that when no air can be exhaled. I bet you tried it, didn’t you?

The benefits of threading beads for children are to improve fine motor skills: Threading beads can help to strengthen the small muscles in children’s hands as they grasp different sized beads. The benefit of developing fine motor skills through threading beads is that it uses similar hand movements to gripping a pencil. Also, it helps to establish order to one’s sense of being. It leads to higher cognitive skills as one advances in complex pattern details.

Line Time:
This week we went back in time and took a look at Ancient Greece and talked about Greek Mythology. The Greek Gods hung out on Mt. Olympus and we learned the King of all Gods was Zeus and if you made him angry he had a lightning bolt in his hand that he would throw at you.  Zeus had a wife named Hera and she was the Goddess of Marriage.  If you were a sailor you dare not make Poseidon angry because he was the the God of the Seas and held a trident (a fork like spear) in his hand.  Zeus had a brother that he sent to the under world and that God was named Hades.  Hades had a pet that was a three headed dog named Cerberus.  We also learned about Pan and Medusa.

Apples, peaches, and raspberries are all members of the rose family.  Trees that bear fruit in the rose family are: apples, pears, plums, cherries, apricots and peaches. Line Time:
We went back in time and learned about Ancient Egypt.  We learned that the leaders or kings were called Pharaohs and when a king died they used a method to preserve them called mummification.  The pharaohs that were mummified look nothing like you see at Halloween or on cartoons.  The ancient Egyptians had a a written language called hieroglyphics which incorporated symbols such as cats, humans, and other daily objects. We also learned that the ancient Egyptians were responsible for building the Great Pyramids and The Sphinx which has the body of a lion and a head of a man. 

 

                       

 

     

 

 

Did You Know? (Squirrels, Those Pesky Critters)
The American Public Power Association (APPA) says that squirrels are the most frequent cause of power outages in the U.S. The APPA even developed a data tracker called “The Squirrel Index” that analyzes the patterns and timing of squirrels’ impact on electrical power systems. Turns out, the peak times of the year for squirrel attacks are from May to June and October to November. 
Typically, the squirrels cause problems by tunneling, chewing through electrical insulation, or becoming a current path between electrical conductors. “Frankly, the number one threat experienced to date by the U.S. electrical grid is squirrels,” said John C. Inglis, the former Deputy Director of the National Security Agency, in 2015.

The Dental Hygienist:
We had a Dental Hygienist visit and she taught us how to brush our teeth, floss, and what are good things and bad things for our teeth (what we eat).

    

 

Peek In The Classroom:

This boy is working on the sandpaper numbers. The direct purpose of the Sandpaper Numbers is to teach children the symbols that represent each number, allowing them to visually identify any number from 0 – 9. In Montessori education this is specifically taught separately to counting from 0 – 9, where children often fall back on rote memorisation. The roughness of the symbols help the child remember the number via the tactile sense when they trace the number with their finger.

 

He is working onbthe knobless cylinders found in the sensorial area. The purpose of these cylinders is to develop child’s fine-motor movements, concentration, hand-eye coordination, and visual perception of dimension. Here he is findingbthe relationships (diameter) of the different colors.

 

Ms. Angela showing students how to create “10” with colored bead bars. The purpose is to familiarize the child with all the possible number combinations that make up ten, to acquire a subconscious knowledge that no two numbers together amount to more than 18. This gives practice in getting the first basis of memorizing the essential combinations with which, when known, one can make any addition. To emphasize the fact that in addition, you will be making tens and to reinforce the knowledge that addition and multiplication are of the same concept.

Line Time:
Presidents Of The United States Of America (Wasn’t that a 90’s band? Gunna eat a lot of peaches!) We first learned about George Washington and how he was our first president and was the General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln came from a poor family, freed the slaves and was president during the Civil War.  We were introduced to Franklin D. Roosevelt and how he was president during World War II and how John F. Kennedy fought for equal rights.  We then learned that Joe Biden was current president. The children were taught that the president’s wives are called the first lady and that the president lives in the white house in Washington DC, and flies on a jet called Air Force 1.  We discussed what responsibilities the President has.  The children came up with keeping us safe, keeping the world safe, and running the country. 

       

   

 

 

Did you know? (Fish Lips)
Most lipsticks contain fish scales.
This is also known as pearl essence. It is what gives the lipstick the shimmering appearance it has. Pearl Essence is the the silvery stuff found in fish scales that’s used in some lipsticks, nail polishes, ceramic glazes, etc., to make them shimmery. Pearl essence is obtained primarily from herring and is one of many by-products of large-scale commercial fish processing. Synthetic versions have been developed, but to what extent they’ve supplanted the natural variety I will turn a blind eye.
