Line Time: Dinosaurs- We traveled back in time and discovered some fascinating things about certain dinosaurs. We learned that dinosaurs no longer exist and that they are extinct. We know dinosaurs exist because scientist found their bones or fossils. From these fossil we saw that some teeth were long and sharp to tear flesh from it’s prey which belonged to meat eaters or carnivores (T Rex). Some teeth were flat for grinding plants, leaves, and branches and belonged to plant eaters or herbivores (Brachiosauras).
Who remembers Dinosaurs? Not the Momma!
Did You Know? (What’s The Diff?)? I am a week late since this would have been apropo during Halloween…. hehe. The word cemetery (from Greek κοιμητήριον, “sleeping place”) implies that the land is specifically designated as a burial ground and originally applied to the Roman catacombs. The term graveyard is often used interchangeably with cemetery, but a graveyard primarily refers to a burial ground within a churchyard.

This student is working on the Phonics Folder which is an pre-reading exercise. Phonics is a reading method that allows a child to learn the sounds of letters by developing an understanding of how these sounds are used individually, in groups and whole words. Phonetic instruction is the foundational stepping stone in a Montessori Language Arts program.
Look at this guy focusing on a work in Practical Life (you can almost see the tongue sticking out, lol). Practical Life in Montessori is purposeful activity, develops motor control and coordination, and develops independence, concentration, and a sense of responsibility.
She is working on her Kindergarten Binder and is practicing cursive. Dr. Montessori chose lower case cursive because the gentle curved lines are an extension of the natural movement of the child’s hand. When writing in cursive the act of connecting the letters that form a word help the child’s mind to see those letters as a word.

This student is working on the Binomial Cube found in the sensorial area in the room. The Binomial Cube is introduced to children from around 3.5 years to 4 years old. In these early stages, the purpose of the material is less focused on the complex mathematics behind the material, and rather is to provide a challenge for a child’s ability to find patterns and relationships between the blocks. the mathematics mentioned of the binomial cube is actually an Algebraic equation….. (a+b)3=a3 + 3a2b + 3ab2 + b3.

Line Time: Amphibians- This week we looked at the Amphibian. We talked about how the Amphibians are vertebrates, cold blooded (the body temperature changes to the temperature that surrounds the amphibian), their skin is soft and moist, and they are born from jelly eggs. Some examples of Amphibians are toads, frogs, and salamanders. We learned that the term amphibian means of two worlds. Amphibians are born in the water but live their life on land. This is a Monday morning when Ms. Angela put new works on the shelf in Practical Life. Look at the interest and curiosity it created.The same day as the picture above after our line time. The students dug into the new works!!!!!!! Look at the focus of the children working.
This boy composed several numbers using the golden beads/9 tray. He thought of this number by himself. Next he will learn to compose numbers with empty columns (which rocks the child’s world) then start to perform operations (addition, multiplication, subtraction, division).
This student is working with the Pink (short vowel sounds) Rhyming material. The purpose of rhyming is to provide practice in discriminating speech sounds in words which leads to beginning reading. These activities will develop phonemic awareness as well as listening skills and intonation patterns of the spoken language.

Line Time: Reptiles- This week we learned about reptiles and what makes a reptile a reptile. Reptiles are vertebrates, cold blooded (body temperature changes to the temperature around them), they are born from hard shelled eggs and their skin is dry, with scales. Some examples of reptiles are snakes, turtles, and lizards. Below was my childhood Saturday TV entertainment (notice how it is in black and white?).

Did You Know? Does hot water freeze faster than cold water? This is known as the Mpemba effect. Evaporation is the strongest candidate to explain the Mpemba effect. As hot water is placed in an open container the water begins to cool, the overall mass decreases as some of the water evaporates. With less water to freeze, the process can take less time. My thoughts is that it is a misnomer due to less ice is produced. But who am I to say?

This girl is working on the Ten Board which is a math material. These full size Séguin tens boards teach the child the number names, symbols and sequence from 10 to 99 and further strengthens the relationship between quantity and symbol.
A group of children are working on puzzle maps. The aim of the Puzzle Maps allow the child to physically see, hold, and trace sections of the world in order to identify each continent, country, and state that is represented in the puzzles. The knobs on each piece help strengthen fine motor skills.
She is working on a math material called The Nine Tray. The 9 Tray is an important lesson in the sequence of the golden bead work. It entails an elaborate set up, as well as mastery of building numbers, using unit beads, ten bars, hundred squares and thousand cubes. Allowing the children to concretely see the growth of numbers through the hierarchy of the decimal system it is a wonderful introduction to place value and organization of the ‘Golden Bead’ materials.

Line Time: Mammals-This past week we learned about Mammals. Mammals are vertebrates (have a spine or backbone), warm blooded (their body temperature does not change), have hair or fur, live bearers, and eat/drink mother’s milk when young. Some mammals live in the water such as dolphins and whales. The only mammal that can fly is the bat! Cats, dogs, elephants, and rats are mammals. Oh, and people are mammals as well. “Are we not men? We are MAMMALS………. ”
I have to do this every year…. If you want to play Six Degrees Of Separation for DEVO, Mark Mothersbaugh’s (front man for DEVO) brother does the confirmation classes for my church. Also, I do childcare at the church and I have cared for his niece’s children. I know useless but interesting information. Bonus trivia: Mark Mothersbaugh went to Woodridge High School.

This girl is working on the Number Rods that is found in the Math area. The Number Rods help children learn the names of numbers and their sequence and learn to correctly associate between the spoken number and its quantity. Children grow to understand that each rod represents a unique quantity and that each number is represented by a single object as a whole, separate from others.
She is working on the Table top Number Rods which is exactly the same as the above mentioned Number Rods but smaller.
This boy is working on the Introduction To The Decimal System. In the Decimal System, the children first explore the golden bead materials sensorially. They learn from concrete to abstract, combining the golden beads with the abstract color coded numerals, building their association of quantity and symbol. Notice how this boy has an very interested observer.

Academic Enrichment aka kindergarten: Biggest to smallest where we live- We discovered we live in the vast galaxy of the Milky Way (not the candy bar), then we are still in space and live in a group of planets called The Solar System. Then the planet we live is the planet Earth. Once we touched down we found we live in the Northwestern Hemisphere and live on the continent of North America. Once we found land we live in the country of The United States Of America and live in the great state of Ohio (Go Buckeyes). We all live in Summit County but live in different cities and have different addresses and phone numbers. What a journey it was!

Line Time: Living and Non-Living- This week we talked about living and non-living things. Your children now know what makes a living thing. All living things reproduce, grow, eat or take in nutrients, breathe or exchange gases, and need water. We are all in agreement that plants, animals, trees, grass, are living things! My shoe is not a living thing nor am I at 5:00 am. Some of the parents are not living until they have had their coffee. My youngest son’s shoes may or may not be living. I do not get close enough to tell due to the smell and I may have seen them move on their own…. Boys that are 15 1/2 years old, SMH.
Fun Fact: No Mosquitos In Iceland? Iceland is one of the few habitable places on the planet that is mosquito free and nobody really seems to know why. It’s not nearly as cold as Antarctica, which is so frigid that mosquitoes (and people, for that matter) could never survive exposure to the elements there for long. There is only ONE mosquito in Iceland and is it the one that has lived in a jar of alcohol at the Icelandic Institute of Natural History ever since the 1980s, when a scientist captured it in an airplane.

Ms. Angela observing/giving a lesson with a student on Sandpaper Numbers. The direct purpose of the Sandpaper Numbers is to teach children the symbols that represent each number, allowing them to visually identify any number from 0 – 9. In Montessori education this is specifically taught separately to counting from 0 – 9, where children often fall back on rote memorization.
She is working on the Sand Paper Letters. The direct purpose of the sandpaper letters is to teach the child the sounds of the alphabet by means of muscular and visual memory. The indirect purposes of the sandpaper letters are preparation for reading and writing. The sandpaper letters are an exciting and important material for the children to discover. Also, look at the concentration of the students in the background.
Another look at the focus of the child rolling a mat. Rolling and unrolling the mat is one of the preliminary activities children learn in the class. The mats are used every day and they help to define a child’s work space. Rolling and unrolling the mat promotes co-ordination of movement, development of muscles and concentration. Look how straight this mat is.

Academic Enrichment aka kindergarten: Since we live in the great state of Ohio I felt it was needed to become familiar with the states that surround our home state. We started with Ohio which is the Buckeye State and the abbreviation is OH. We then looked at the state to the east of us named Pennsylvania (not Transylvania) which is called the Keystone State and the abbreviation is PA. We traveled south and discovered West Virginia which is the Mountain State and the abbreviation is WV. Moving to the west we ran into Kentucky which is the Blue Grass State and the abbreviation is KY. Moving more westward is Indiana or the Hoosier State (what is a Hoosier anyway?) and the abbreviation is IN. To my chagrin I introduced the students to TSUN. I can not bring myself to even say the name…. xichigan wolverine state.
Let us end not on a low note like the last sentence in the previous paragraph and present the “official” things for the state of Ohio…

Food Groups, This week we had fun learning about the food groups in our class. Grains and Cereals (pasta, rice, bread, cereal, crackers), Fruit (apples, grapes, kiwi, mango which is my favorite), Vegetables (cucumbers, carrots, potato, broccoli, eggplant, which is my favorite) Dairy (my favorite… milk, cheese {I love cheese/smoked gouda}, yogurt), meats (beef, pork, chicken), and proteins, fats and sugars and how many servings we should have per day.
Fun Fact: Sea otters hold hands while they sleep. This ridiculously cute behavior is an effort to avoid floating away from their partner while they sleep. Sometimes they hold hands in groups, producing a “raft.”

Line Time: Healthy Habits- This week we learned how stay healthy. We learned that we need to wash our hands thoroughly and keep our whole bodies clean by taking shower, baths, washing our hair, and brushing our teeth. We now know how long to wash our hands by singing the ABC’s which is a good idea but we decided it would be too difficult to sing while brushing out teeth. Another way to keep healthy is to cover our sneezes and coughs with the inside of our elbow to trap germs from flying all over the place. Another healthy habit is to get enough sleep to rest our bodies and our minds. Exercise such as running, biking, climbing, and even walking leads to a healthy body and mind. We discovered if we eat healthy food like fruits, vegetables, protein, and limited sweets that is good for our bodies. More on that next week.

Fun Fact: Pigs Don’t Sweat- If someone tells you they’re “sweating like a pig” you might want to point out to them (if you’re that sort of person) that if they were being biologically accurate, that would mean they were not sweating at all. Swine are born without sweat glands, so when they need to cool off, their only option tends to be to find a cool puddle of mud in which they can roll around.

The short vowel sound for a is usually taught first because once children know the sound for the letter ‘a’ and a few other consonants such as m, s, t then they can start ‘reading’ and ‘spelling’ words. Teach to mastery. … This makes it less likely they will confuse short vowel sounds.
She is working on the introduction of the decimal system. The purpose is to introduce the child to the concept of the decimal system and to make the child familiar with the names and relative sizes of the categories. Also! To help the child with the difference in bulk between e.g. 6 units and 6 thousands
The Montessori Teen Board is a great way to introduce the concept of teens to a child. Not only children see how tens and ones are being build to make teens, but they are also physically building teens themselves. Have the child slide a wooden number two on top of a ten board, making twelve.
This boy is developing his fine motor skills by working with putting nuts on bolts. Fine motor skills are those that involve a refined use of the small muscles which control the hand, fingers and thumb. With the development of these skills, a child is able to complete important tasks such as writing, feeding oneself, buttoning and zippering.

Academic Enrichment aka Kindergarten: Hemispheres- The kindergarten students and I went over hemispheres, The Equator, and The Prime Meridian. Actually, the hemispheres are made by The Equator and the Prime Meridian. The North and South Hemisphere are created by The Equator and the East and West Hemisphere are created by the Prime Meridian. We delved further and identified the Northwestern, Northeastern, Southwestern, and Southeastern Hemispheres. that was not as daunting as one would expect.
Two of the Kindergarten students were absent but where are they. We don’t know.

Line Time: Ground Rules:
What a wonderful start to our school year! This week we learned about the ground rules in our classroom. We learned the expected behaviors for work time and were introduced to new work trays in the Practical Life area so that we can strengthen our fine motor skills. We learned how to roll and unroll a mat. The four main rules are 1) No running in the classroom. 2) Listening Ears. 3) Keep our body to our self. 4) Treat people and the room with respect. We are learning how to shake hands, look each other in the eye while shaking hands, and reply with pleasantries when I say good morning (students respond “Good morning Mr. John). What a great start to a great school year!

August Birthdays: A Montessori Classroom consists of 3 to 6 year old students. Here are our newest 4 and 5 year old students.

This boy is working on the Teen Board which is found in the Math area. The Montessori Teen Board is a great way to introduce the concept of teens to a child. Not only children see how tens and ones are being build to make teens, but they are also physically building teens themselves. Notice how he set up the teen numbers in random order?
She is working on the Number Rods. The Number Rods also help children learn the names of numbers and their sequence and learn to correctly associate between the spoken number and its quantity. Children grow to understand that each rod represents a unique quantity and that each number is represented by a single object as a whole, separate from others.
The Knobbed Cylinders are the first lesson in the Sensorial area. The Knobbed Cylinders are a Montessori Sensorial material, designed to assist children in making distinctions in their immediate environment. This material primarily engages the senses of touch and sight. The material is comprised of 10 different cylinders with ‘knobs’ used to hold each object using the pincer grip. This is the start of the vast journey in my classroom.

Line Time: This week we looked at “inner space” which is simply anything under the water. We first started out by learning that there is fresh water and salt water. We then learned about high and low tides and how the moon affects tides. of course, we talked about what lurks beneath the surface of the ocean. Below is the fascinating cuttlefish.
Did you know (This is fascinating)? Dolphins often sleep with one eye open in order to avoid being eaten by sharks. How do they manage to do this? They put one half of their brain to sleep, while the other half is still conscious and functioning. Basically, the dolphin will shut down half of its brain and the corresponding eye will also close. Why does this remind me of a Metallica song?

Peek In The Classroom:
She is working on the Knobless Cylinders found in the Sensorial area. The Knobbed Cylinders are a Montessori Sensorial material, designed to assist children in making distinctions in their immediate environment. This material primarily engages the senses of touch and sight. The material is comprised of 10 different cylinders with ‘knobs’ used to hold each object using the pincer grip.
These Fractional Insets are found in the Math area. The Fraction Insets build on the familiar structure of the Metal Insets, but rather than teaching shape and design, they introduce the child to concepts of fractions and equivalents.
He is working on the Sandpaper Numbers. The direct purpose of the Sandpaper Numbers is to teach children the symbols that represent each number, allowing them to visually identify any number from 0 – 9. In Montessori education this is specifically taught separately to counting from 0 – 9, where children often fall back on rote memorization.
The bottom line is that Montessori extension lessons help the child to have further experience with the concepts of the materials. Often times the extension activity draws the child towards a more abstracted view of the original concrete concept that was introduced. He has discovered the correlation between two different works.
