Kindergarten Program (Top)

Full Day | 8am – 3pm (Monday – Friday)

Students entering Kindergarten must turn 5 years of age by the 1st of August of the enrolling school year. Students entering Absorbent Minds Kindergarten from another preschool program will be accepted for a two-month probationary period to assess Kindergarten readiness and adjustment to the Montessori environment. Full acceptance will be granted based on evaluations by the administrator and classroom teacher(s).

Kindergarten students are the oldest in their mixed-age group. At this point in their development and learning with the Montessori materials, they have become the “experts.” They are working with more advanced materials, attend Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop small group lessons, and have regular dedicated small group lessons and activities with other kindergarten students across our classrooms in addition to their independent time with their classroom teacher.  Kindergarteners dedicate time to reading daily, practicing handwriting, and work on special individual projects. In their role as experts in the classroom, the Kindergarteners become leaders and role models to the younger students. This is an excellent opportunity for the children to develop leadership skills and refine their behavior patterns. As they grow in a sense of responsibility, they increase their self-esteem and solidify their existing knowledge and understanding of the Montessori curriculum, while continuously challenging themselves to learn new things. This gives children the readiness they need to meet new challenges and forms a foundation for life.

Full Day | 8am – 3pm (Monday – Friday)
Our Elementary program serves children ages 6-12 years old in grades 1st through 6th. Students entering our elementary program from other schools will be accepted on a probationary period to assess acclimation to the Montessori environment. Students will also be assessed on basic grade-level skills. Full acceptance will be granted based on assessments, observations by the administrator and classroom teacher(s), and adjustment to the Montessori environment.

Our teachers are specially trained to encourage, engage, and educate the whole child. Children are exposed to a variety of subjects: Latin, Geography, History, Cultural Studies, Language, Grammar, Geometry, Mathematics, Biology, Physical Science, Music, Art, Handwriting, and Physical Education. Students will be introduced to each subject and have the opportunity to dive deep into those of great interest.

Personal responsibility, self-respect, independence, resourcefulness, and self-government; are only a few of the characteristics Montessori students develop in our prepared elementary environment. Students are challenged daily to set goals and work diligently toward achieving them. We believe that if the student is productive during their time in class, there is no need for homework. We believe that if the child is able to work with concrete materials using their hands they form lasting impressions and there is greater retention of knowledge. We believe children are capable of great things if given the opportunity to explore and discover every day. Teaching is the art and science of assisting discovery.

Enrichment Activities (Top)

daily_schedule_icon_artArt: Our arts program gives students the opportunity to find joy in self-expression by creating works with their own hands. Children find the ability to use their imaginations to construct a work of art to be extremely satisfying. No matter what art medium they are using, (scissors, paint, clay, pastels, etc.) our children are exploring color & relationship, and are learning about design. Our Art activities are designed to teach children how to think creatively, critically and independently. Students will be introduced to famous artists and their unique styles; art history and a wide variety of art mediums. It is our goal to instill a love and appreciation for art. Every student attending on Art day will receive a 1 hour lesson.

daily_schedule_icon_musicMusic: Children love listening to music, moving to music and singing. We strive to expose our students to a variety of music genres, composers and instruments. The children experience a wide range of musical terminology, notes, and instruments. Children learn about tones, scales, rhythms and musicians. Our Exploring Music curriculum is fun, educational and engaging. Every student attending on Music day will receive a 1⁄2 hour lesson.

daily_schedule_icon_scienceScience: Science is fun and interesting to children. They love to see things change before their eyes. It’s like watching magic tricks! Our students will participate in a wide variety of experiments while learning about the Scientific Method. They will begin to ask questions like “What happens if I…” and they will attempt to answer their question with a hypothesis. The overall goal of science at the preschool and Kindergarten level is to teach that science is fun and all you need to do is get a little dirty. Every student attending on Science day will receive a 1⁄2 hour lesson.

daily_schedule_icon_Asian_SunTae Kwon Do: Among the many goals Maria Montessori set for her students were respect, focus, confidence and discipline. Asian Sun, Ohio’s best Martial Arts School ranked by number of black belts produced, instructor to student ratio, and national champions; emphasizes and builds on Montessori’s goals. We are excited to partner with Asian Sun and have our students participate in their nationally acclaimed Preschool Program. The program focuses on improving preschool age children’s basic motor and listening skills, learning respectful behavior and courtesy, and developing self control in a fun and motivating way. The preschool program curriculum, Tiger Tots, consists of developing 9 major skills that are necessary for participation in any sport or activity. The Tiger Tots skills are Respect, Focus, Teamwork, Control, Balance, Memory, Discipline, Fitness and Coordination. This enrichment program is optional and does cost an additional fee.

Tae Kwon Do is offered as Five 6-week sessions during the school year. Each lesson is approximately 30 minutes in length. Participants test for their next rank/belt at the final class of each 6 week session.

Private Piano Lessons:  Individual piano lessons are offered to students beginning in 1st grade (or Kindergarten, if space is available). Piano lessons are provided by our music teacher(s) and given to each student throughout the school day working around their lesson and classroom work time. Piano lessons are optional and do cost an additional fee.

Latin: Latin small group lessons begin in our elementary program, once reading and grammar abilities reach the appropriate level needed for success in Latin. Adding this classical language to our elementary curriculum was purposefully chosen.  Not only does it align with the Montessori grammar curriculum but it is highly organized and logical much like the study of math.  It enhances critical thinking, builds problem-solving, and helps cultivate a keen attention to detail.
