Enrichment Highlight

In music class, we learned about triangles and practiced our Christmas songs.

Work Time:

This student is working on the Number Rods. She is learning to match quantity to symbol and is refining her sense of order, coordination, concentration, and independence.

This student is practicing zipping. Zipping is an important care of self activity especially in the winter with getting ready to go outside in the cold.
This child is learning how to put the Trinomial Cube together while also getting an introduction into algebra and preparation for the formula a3+3a2b+3a2c+6abc+b3+3ab2+3b2c+3ac2+3bc2+c3.

Take A Peek Into Our Week/Ms.Kate/December 13,2019

Today’s the big day!!! Your kiddos have been working so hard on the Christmas show!!! We are all so excited! ! This week our theme was Christmas around the world!! We learned all of the different traditions and how people celebrate in England, Russia, Germany, China, and in South America. It was so cool learning all about the different ways they celebrate Christmas in other countries!! Ms. Amanda had such great crafts that went along with the different countries. It was so much fun !!

This work helps the child memorize the essential combinations in addition. The various charts give the possibility of repetition, which helps to fix these in the memory of the child.
When working on different word lists it helps the child associate words with the same anomalies with each other, thereby making reading phonograms easier.
The sandpaper letters teach the child the sounds of the alphabet. When working on this the child is encouraged to trace the symbol over and over again until the shape of the letter becomes a part of the childs muscle memory.

REMINDERS:

Tonight is the Christmas show!! Please get to the high school at 530 sharp!!!

Next week is christmas fun week!!

Monday- christmas socks day

Tuesday – dress as your favorite Christmas character

Wednesday – wear red and green

Thursday – christmas sweater or shirt day

Friday – pj and show and tell day!!

A Peek at Our Week | Elementary | Week of December 9

This week our “Peek” was written by our students! These students read our previous blogs, took pictures around the room, and filled in a blog template. The students did some editing together, and with a teacher, so what you will read below is their final product. There are still some misspelled words in their final product, but in a Montessori classroom we focus on the process, instead of the end result. Dr. Montessori believed when we put all of the emphasis on the final product, we devalue everything leading up to that point. This can discourage repetition which will make mastery of a skill difficult. The purpose of the students writing the blog is to provide you with a glimpse into the room through their eyes, to provide them with practice of real world skills, and to give them a deeper understanding of the materials in the room. We hope you enjoy their work!

“A Peek at Our Week” by Darin (Third Year) and Reese (Second Year)

Lower Elementary by Reese

The first grade had research. Second grade were wrking on Racks and Tubes. They were wrking on drawing.

A second grader wrking on Racks and Tubes because he had follow up wrk.
He had research for follow up wrk.

Upper Elementary by Darin

The fourth graders learned about how many electrons a compound needs to be stable. Fifth graders did multiplying fractions. Sixth grade took the volume of a cone using some parts of the formula for the cylinder.

We took the cards from the Bohr Diagram and we made the Periodic Table with them.
She is completing her follow-up work.

REMINDERS:

Peek In Our Week ^^^ Mr. John’s Classroom ^^^ Week Of December 9, 2019

Line Time:
We spent the majority of line time practicing for the Christmas Show.  It was a rockin time!  But I could not find the eggnog, or cookies for Santa.  Oh wait…. Score !!!!!!!!

Speaking Of Eggnog (which I love by the way):
While culinary historians debate its exact lineage, most agree
eggnog originated from the early medieval British drink called posset, which was made with hot milk that was curdled with wine or ale and flavored with spices. In the Middle Ages, posset was used as a cold and flu remedy.  Now I want to try posset even if it looks like it is a gelatnis solid.

Cultural Subjects:
Your children can now count to ten in 17 languages (English, Latin, Sign Language, Spanish, German, French, Greek, Japanese, Arabic with the Lebanese dialect, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Swedish, Tagalog, Hebrew, Korean, Hungarian).

Peek In The Classroom:

She has almost completed the fish puzzle which she will learn the different parts of the fish. Also, the little white knobs on the pieces, tracing the puzzle parts, and coloring the traced pieces will help her fine motor skills.

We are following this student through her trek in a Sensitive Period. This is when she has an insatiable attraction to a particular area/subject or particular work in the classroom. She desires to work with Geometric Shapes. Here she has mastered the small hexagon box.

Stretttttcccchhh. This girl is working on the Pink Tower and Brown Stair. She is actually doing an extension of the work. She wanted to know if the Brown Stair is placed on end if it will be the same height as the Pink Tower. Obviously, the Brown Stair is taller than the Pink Tower. Her question is answered.

The cube is made up of a number of colored blocks, which fit together in a specific way. Assembling it uses a child’s fine-motor skills and requires the ability to discriminate between the blocks based on multiple characteristics. Unlike Montessori’s iconic pink tower, for example, the trinomial cube does not isolate only one quality. Some blocks have one color, others have two. Some blocks are cubes, while others are rectangular prisms. While the pink tower blocks vary only in size, the trinomial cube’s blocks vary in color, size, and shape! This makes the trinomial cube a more complex sensorial material, and it requires organized thinking to master.

Enrichment fun week of 12/02/19

Getting ready for Science fun with Mr. John!  Listening and thinking about what our hypothesis will be.  Creating our Ketchup Submarine!

Our infamous Ketchup Submarine,  more experimentation with buoyancy!  The air pocket (bubble) in the Ketchup packet allows the packet to float!

Squeeze the bottle and applying pressure on the packet causes the bubble to get smaller.  As the bubble gets smallet the Ketchup packet gets more dense than the water around it.  This then causes the Ketchup packet to sink!  Release the pressure and  the packet will float! Science!!!!!

For science this week we learned that oxidation is when one molecule gives another electrons. We oxidized luminal using hydrogen peroxide. When the hydrogen peroxide oxidized the luminal it began to glow.Work Time:

Movable Alphabet: This child is practicing blending and forming words using the different letter sounds she has mastered “jet” “zip” “flag” and “ax”
Addition: These children are using the golden beads to discover that when you put two small numbers together (addends) you get a larger number (sum) and that this process is called addition.
Bead Board: This child is using the bead board to do static addition. It is a more abstract way to work with the decimal system. He is also familiarizing himself with the different categories: units, tens, hundreds and thousands by looking at it in a different way.
Multiplication Bead Board: This child is practicing multiplication in a way that will lead her to the memorization of the essential multiplication tables.

December Birthdays:
The Montessori classroom is comprised of 3 year old to 6 year old students.  Here are our newest 4 and 5 year old students.

Pastor Kirk Reads:
Pastor Kirk read a story how one tree in the Carpathian Mountains helps several animals in the forest.  Fun Fact…  My grandmother’s village in Slovakia was at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. One student blurted that that fact was not fun.

What’s The Diff?
What is the difference between bologna and baloney?

Bologna is the name of a city in Italy, pronounced “boh-LOAN-ya.” But although the sausage named after the city in English is spelled the same, it is pronounced “buh-LOAN-ee” and is often spelled baloney. Either spelling is acceptable for the sliced meat product.  P.S. I love fried bologna/baloney!!!

Cultural Subjects:

Peek In The Classroom:

These two boys worked with the Pink Tower and Brown Stairs. Here they matched the corresponding pieces of the Pin Tower and Brown Stairs. This deviation of the primary goal is called an extension.

This student traced, colored, and labeled the Continent Puzzle Map.

This kindergarten student is working in her binder. Specifically she is hworking on her 100 page. Her first page is from 1 to 100 then 101 to 200 and so on. Let’s see how far she gets at the end of the school year.

Theses students are working on an Albanesi Assessment. This assessment it a bridge between Montessori tracking and traditional education grading.

A Peek at Our Week | Elementary | Week of December 2

“The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” – Maria Montessori

I found a wonderful, short article explaining this quote by Dr. Montessori on private schools that I wanted to share. You can find it below.

“Giving children age-appropriate responsibilities allows them to become accountable to themselves and others, as well as the environment around them. In life, there are consequences for actions, both positive and negative, and a Montessori child learns this essential life skill. The person in charge of the in-home care and directresses allow children to make age-appropriate decisions regarding their immediate needs.  This develops a child’s independence and confidence knowing that they can do things for themselves. These skills inspire self-esteem as they enable children to learn to help themselves.” – Peel Montessori Private School

This second year student is working with the Verb Command Cards. Doing this at this seemingly early stage is common practice in private schools because they are usually a bit more advanced and go through regular curricular material a bit faster than normal schools. These cards give students directions to follow like, “Smile at a friend,” or “Spin the globe.” After completing these directions, students record the sentences in their notebooks and draw the grammar symbols above each word. Being able to recognize grammar symbols allows students to recognize patterns in writing, which improves their own writing and reading skills!
This second year student is recreating one of our botany charts. She has learned about the types of leaf margins and is making her own chart to continue her studies of the leaf! She drew a chart with the entire leaf, then drew another chart where she is highlighting the margin of the leaf with another color! Exposing students to advanced terminology, like the names of leaf margins, allows them to pay closer attention to nature, which leads to a greater appreciation for our Earth.
This Upper Elementary student is completing a research chart about the history of chemistry! He was interested to learn more about Niels Bohr and how many women have made amazing contributions to the field!
These students are completing a microscope slide study! They cut small letters and pictures from a magazine, created a slide with distilled water, and recorded their observations.
They were calling themselves “The Mustache-keteers” while completing their study!
