A Peek into Reading Group

This was our last Mo Willams book for Reading Group. We read My Friend Is Sad. In the book, Elephant is sad and Piggie tries to cheer him up by dressing up as a cowboy, robot, and a clown, but this does not cheer Elephant up. It ends up that Gerald did not know that it was Piggie in the costumes and all he wanted was  his friend, not the clown, robot, and cowboy. Piggie jokes at the end that Gerald needs new glasses.

During the readings, the students listended to me read and repeated the words after me. We had discussions about how the characters were feeling in the book, and why Piggie would tell Gerald he needed new glasses. The group wrote responses to prompts such as, what they were wondering about and why the robot, cowboy, and robot didn’t cheer Gerald up.

The students are posing for the last reading group before the new year.

A Peek Into Reading Group

The kindergartners have been listening to the book Waiting Is Not Easy by Mo Willems. In the story, Piggie tells Gerald  that he has a surprise for him. Gerald is excited but Piggie tells him he has to wait for the surprise. Elephant becomes impatient and does not want to wait anymore. Piggie tells him it will be worth the wait. After waiting all day, Piggie shows Gerald the stars and Elephant realizes it was worth the wait.

After the readings, we disscussed how Elephant was behaving while he was waiting and that sometimes it is hard to be patient. They drew a time that they had a hard time waiting, wote about what they wondered during the story, and why they thought Gerald was not happy about waiting, and then we made a  chart together as a group.

In reading group we read the Mo Willems’ book I Am Invited to a Party! In the story, Piggie gets invited to a party and asks Elephant to come with him. They do not know what type of party it is, so they discuss how they should dress. They end up dressing for a fancy, costume, pool party.

After each reading the kindergartners completed different activities. They wrote about what they were wondering about, and what kind of party they would want to go to. Then, they drew what they thought Elephant and Piggie did at the party, and what they would wear if they went to a party.

A Peek into Reading Group

These past two weeks, we read the Mo Willems’ book We Are in a Book. In this book the characters figure out they are in a book. They decide that it would be fun to make the readers say words. This amuses them a lot, and they continue to make the reader say words. Gerald finds out that the book is going to end and this makes him sad, so he and Piggie ask to be read again.

After I read aloud to the students, we had discussions about the book,  they drew scenes from the story, wrote about what they were wondering during the story, and wrote about how the characters felt in the story. For the last reading, we made puppets and the students acted out the story with their puppets while I read.

Over the past two weeks, we read the book My New Friend Is So Fun. In this book, Elephant and Snake find out that their best friends are playing together. They get worried that their best friends are having more fun together and will forget about them. It ends up that Piggie and Brian Bat (Elephant and Snake’s best friends) were playing best friend games. They decided to draw their best friends, Elephant and Snake. At the end the two main characters are happy their friends are having fun.

After the readings, the kindergartners participated in discussions, writing activities, and drawing activities to aid in comprehension. Once the students are finished with their papers, they share and we discuss their ideas.

For the first two weeks of reading group, the students listened to a Mo Willems book, A Big Guy Took My Ball. The group followed along with me while I read aloud and liked to repeat after me. After each reading, the students completed an activity such as writing about what they were wondering during the story, drawing a scene from the story, and discussing how they would feel if they were the characters.

The group is drawing the characters all playing together in the end of the story.

A Peek Into Reading Group

This last week the kindergartners listened to another Mo Willems book called We Are in a Book!.  In this book Piggie and Elephant (Gerald) figure out that they are in a book and readers are reading them. They start interacting with the reader and make him/ her say words. Gerald and Piggie are very entertained by the fact that they can make the reader say silly words. The kindergartners were entertained as well and thought the characters were hilarious. They were so excited that they wanted me to read the story again!

After the readings the students got to share what they thought about the book and discussed how the characters were feeling throughout the story. They wrote and drew about what they were wondering about after the first reading. For the last reading group, they made Piggie and Elephant puppets and acted out the story while I read. The students were thoroughly engaged during the readings of the Piggie and Elephant series. It was a joy to teach reading group this year and see the kindergarteners grow in their reading skills. I hope you all have a fun and safe summer!

Over the last two weeks the students listened to a Mo Willems book, My New Friend is So Fun. In the story, Gerald and Snake are talking about how their best friends Piggie and Brian Bat just met and are having fun. Gerald and Snake start to worry that their best friends are having fun without them and that they will lose their best friends. They go find Piggie and Brian Bat and it ends up that they were drawing pictures of Snake and Gerald together. The two aren’t worried anymore and tell them to have fun.

The kindergarteners worked on evaluative activities after the readings to enhance their comprehension of the story. They drew pictures of scenes from the book and wrote responses from writing prompts. For our last reading they decided to read along with me, and even used proper inflection based on the punctuation.

A Peek Into Reading Group

After returning from spring break, we started reading books from the library for reading group. Our first book was A Big Guy Took My Ball by Mo Willems. This story is from the Elephant and Piggie series. In the book, Piggie tells Elephant (Gerald) that a big guy took the ball that he found. Gerald tells him that he will get the ball back for him. Well, Gerald finds out just how BIG this “big guy ” is. He ends up being a whale and the ball belonged to him. The big guy was sad because no one would play with him. Instead of getting mad, Piggie and Gerald invite the whale to play together.

The kindergartners particiated in activities that went along with the story. They wrote their own questions about the story, drew pictures of their interpretations of the how the characters felt and diferent scenes, along with particitpated in discussions. By the last reading of the book, they were all reading the story along with me!

The kindergartners listened to the poem Where Would You Be. It was about where you would want to be during a storm. They discussed how they felt about storms and where they would rather be. We also discussed how the speaker describes the storm and why he/she used those specific descriptors.

Throughout the story the group got to write down their thoughts about the poem, drew what the storm looked like, and even wrote their own poem about specific weather.

Here are the kindergartners writing their own poem.
