A Peek At Our Week| Ms. Kristen’s Class| Week of February 12th

This week was full of fun as we dicussed the Winter Olympics and different Winter sports! The children enjoyed learning what the Olympics are and learning what sports are in the Winter Olympics. We have also been tracking how many medals the United States has won so far!

Ms. Mel and Ms. Yao (Ryan’s mom) also shared with us about Lunar New Year! Ms. Mel explained about how each year is represented by an animal in Korean and Chinese culture and that 2018 is The Year of The Dog. She even taught the children how children bow to their elders on Lunar New Year and receive money from their elders and Ryan’s mom shared with us how children in China buy all new clothes to begin year. Ms. Yao also gave the children a red envelope with a chocolate coin and told them that for New Year’s, children in China receive a red envelope from their parents which contain money. So much fun!

We also had so much fun at our Valentine’s Day Party! Thank you to all the parents who brought in the needed items for our party and to those who took time out of their day to help make our Valentine’s Day Party so much fun, including activities for taller and smaller kids, such as the best bounce house for toddlers and many other activities.

A Peek at Our Week | Elementary | Week of February 12

“Independence is not a static condition; it is a continuous conquest, and in order to reach not only freedom, but also strength, and the perfecting of one’s powers, it is necessary to follow this path of unremitting toil.” – Maria Montessori

As a parent of a Montessori child, you might be surprised by the amount of independence and self-regulation we require of such young children. We ask your child to remember their own homework and supplies, to manage their own time and meet deadlines, to answer their own questions, to come up with solutions when they have dropped the ball, among many other things. I often wonder what age it was that I finally learned how I learn best, how to find the information I was seeking, and how to be productive on my busiest of days. It may not have been until college that I really had a grasp on all of these things. How lucky these students are to be constantly working towards mastering these skills at such a young age! Think of how much they will be able to accomplish in the future, with ease, because of the Montessori environment! When your child is struggling with the challenges that arise in the Elementary classroom, remember that independence they are working towards, be that listening ear and that constant reminder that they just might not be able to do it YET, but with hard work, their struggle with one specific task or challenge will be temporary.

This Monday we took a trip to the Tallmadge Library to collect books in preparation of the Science Fair. Students are researching questions they have come up with about plants, robots, electricity, gases, and animals. Students were required to search the books, not just for the overall topic, but to be sure it would be helpful in answering their question. Each child has started their research in order to come up with a hypothesis before experimentation.
The third year students have been working with the Pythagorean Theorem. Previously, they found that the formula worked with isosceles triangles. This week, they tried the formula with a scalene triangle, then found Pythagorean Triples!
All students have partnered up this month to complete a study of a country in Europe. This first year student is researching the homes in Russia. After completing their research, students will write a research paper and present their findings to the class.
This second year student is researching what would happen if she placed a balloon on one thumbtack, then placed a second balloon on a large amount of thumbtacks. She discovered that the weight is evenly distributed with the pile of thumbtacks and her balloon did not pop!
This month, students are trying experiments that show how the human body works. This week, they had a taste test. The children had to cover their eyes and plug their nose while they tried an apple and an onion. They then discussed whether sight and smell make a difference in taste!
Our decoration committee transformed leftover “Fun”raiser decorations to make our Valentine’s Party a hit! We especially loved their signs welcoming us to “Pairadice” and the “Love Shack.”
Our game committee planned some exciting challenges for us! We had to pin the heart on the alien, find a heart hidden by opposite teams within five minutes, and control our bodies enough to stop on a dime during “Freeze Dance.”

A Peek at Next Week

Next week, we have our first “Going Out Experience” to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium on Tuesday. If you are driving other students, please arrive by 8:45. If you are meeting us at the Aquarium, please let me know. Lower Elementary students will discuss indirect objects in sentences, look at the bones in our bodies, and find plants from different continents. Fourth year students will begin their virus models and report and study the Australopithecines. All students will continue their research for the Science Fair. Look for an email about the supplies your child will need!

Fractions: The kindergarten students have been learning how to identify fractions from whole to eighths. We have been talking about what the numerator and denominator are and why they are important. The students have been having fun making their own fraction books.

A Peek at Our Week | Ms. Courtney’s Classroom | Week of February 12th

Pets/Valentine’s Day: We learned that a pet is a companion animal. Which means he/she is kept for a person’s company, protection or entertainment. We talked about how the two most popular pets are cats and dogs so is good to learn how to educate them and using calming treats for dogs amazon is a great aid for this. We learned that some other animals that people commonly keep are: ferrets, rabbits, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, snakes, lizards, fish, frogs, turtles etc, and lastly we sent down info to their parents on the best puppy insurance to have, for those who own pets at home.

Work Time

Nine Layout: This child is becoming familiar with the names and relative sizes of the categories: units, tens, hundreds and thousands. She is also discovering that if she has i.e. 6 units and adds 1 more unit she will have 7 units.
Cards and Counters: This child is demonstrating her knowledge that each number is made up of separate quantities. She is also able to visually see the sequence of numbers and how many separate units go together to form each number.
Zipping: This child is developing his independence and concentration while also gaining finger control and dexterity to manipulate a zipper.
United States Map: This child is learning the names of the states and where they are located on a map.
Pink Rhyming: This child is sorting words that have or end with the same sound as one another.
These boys are enjoying a book about ocean animals.

Peek In Our Week = Mr. John’s Room = Week Of February 12, 2018

Valentine Party:
 

       

 

         

 

      

 

Cultural Subjects:
Your children can count to ten in 20 different languages (English, Latin, Sign Language, Spanish, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Arabic with the Lebanese dialect, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Swedish, Tagolog, Hebrew, Korean, Hungarian, Irish, Kiswahili, and Welsh).

 

Line Time Lesson:
Presidents Of The United States Of America (wasn’t that a 90’s band? Gunna eat a lot of peaches!) We  first learned about George Washington and how he was our first president and was the General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln came from a poor family,  freed the slaves and was president during the Civil War.  We were introduced to Franklin F. Roosevelt and how he was president during World War II and how John F. Kennedy fought for equal rights.  We then learned that Donald Trump was current president. The children were taught that the president’s wives are called the first lady and that the president lives in the white house in Washington DC, and flies on a jet called Air Force 1.  We discussed what responsibilities the President has.  The children came up with keeping us safe, keeping the world safe, and running the country. 

 

Peek In Our Classroom:

This boy is performing the operation of Dynamic Division (with borrowing) with the Stamp Game. This is a fairly long and involved process that takes a fair amount of time and patience. It seems he has a happy face while working on his equations.

 

There were two students that dropped some materials under the animal cages. At first they tried to get the pieces by using a broom handle and yard stick. That just pushed the pieces further back. Then they realized that the shelves were not solid but grated. They asked me to move a cage and she was able to easily reach the pieces. No adults were used in the thought process.
The Kindergarten Students are given special more complex tasks such as greeting the children and entering the time of arrival on the attendance sheet.

 

These girls are working with one of my science bins (The Ocean). Here they are looking at the physical shells and finding them in the book.

Peek Into Our Week | Academic Enrichment Cuyahoga Falls Campus | Weeks 2/5/2018 through 2/12/2018

Kindergarten Lessons:

Math is a wonderful thing!

 

Week Of 2/5/2018:
The kindergarten students learned how to divide using manipulatives (Stamp Game). They learned static division (without borrowing) and dynamic division (with borrowing).

 

 

Purpose For The Stamp Game:
The stamp game is a tool for learning and reinforcing knowledge of the four maths operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The stamp game directly corresponds to the golden bead material which gave the child exposure to the decimal system.

 

Week Of 2/12/2018:
We broke away from the four operations and learned about fractions.
The purpose of fractions are to help the child gain a sensorial impression of fraction, introduction to the concept and notation of fractions, sensorial exploration of equivalency among fraction.  We divided things like circles, triangles, and rectangles.  We divided the class into boys/girls, Mr. John’s Students/Ms. Kate’s Students, and Buckeye Fans/xicigan fans.  No ficigan fans were found.

3/9 are boys. 6/9 are girls.

 

 

Cultural Subjects:
We can now count to ten in 21 different languages (English, Sign Language, Latin, Spanish, German, French, Greek, Japanese, Arabic with the Lebanese Dialect, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Swedish, Tagolog, Hebrew, Korean, Hungarian, Irish, Kiswahili, Welsh,  Dutch/Flemmish, and Polish),
since we really focus on the language part of the education, so we try to teach as many languages as possible, and also give dialectical therapy for the kids that needed.

A Peek At Our Week| Ms. Kristen’s Class| Week of February 5th

This week we learned all about Transportation! We learned about the different way we can travel through air, on land, or in water. The children enjoyed learning the song, ” Down By The Station” and singing other songs about other forms of traveling. Ms. Mel also practiced some phrases in German during our preschool afternoon group time!

 

Working on the Note Naming material from the Music section of the Cultural Area and learning to name Middle C through G!

 

Practicing her gluing skills by making a Heart Mosaic from Art section of the Cultural Area of the classroom!
Working on the Stone Placement material from the Practical Life Area of the classroom! By placing the one stone on each dash on the paper, the child develops their sense of order, concentration, and coordination. Also, this helps indirectly prepare the child as they begin to count and use materials in the Math Area.

Take A Peek Into Our Week/Ms.Kate/February 9th,2018

This week we learned about the word nocturnal and the animals that are categorised for that group. We had fun reading and discovering the certain senses that nocturnal animals have, the difference between diurnal and nocturnal, and what animals do during the day and at night!!

One of our kindergarteners is working on static addition with the golden bead materials. The child gets a better understanding that the process of addition is simply combining the equal and unequal quantities is to form a large quantity.  
Our friends are working on tracing the flower and leaf puzzle. When working on our plant puzzles the children gain knowledge of the parts of the plant and their names. They also gain fine motor skills while tracing and coloring their puzzle.
Our friend is working on the 45 layout. The purpose of this is to reinforce the relationship between the concrete and abstract decimal system.
The pink tower and brown stair teaches visual discrimination of three linear dimensions;length, height, width. The brown stair helps to develop visual discrimination of width.
Dishwashing is part of our practical life area. It teaches the children that all life skills has a number of steps to them that they need to follow in order to become successful.

A Peek at Our Week | Elementary | Week of February 5 | Games

There was a lot of Monday morning excitement with the Super Bowl Sunday night. This week we practiced division with the Stamp Game, the laser tag at home game and the Flat Golden Bead Frame. We found the relationship between fractions and the months of the year. Our students loved to play with the laser tag game, this is a game that we always recommend parents at home, it is essential for kids to move around and waste their energy, specially now that technology is taking over their lives.

These first year students are working together to review division with the Stamp Game. This is a lesson they were introduced to in kindergarten, but continue working towards mastery throughout the first grade year. This material allows students to gain a deeper understanding of how to find a quotient before they are ready to do the work on paper.
This fourth year student and first year student are working on a Writer’s Workshop assignment together. We focused on writing a “How to…” for the friends in our classroom. Students needed to draw an illustration and write directions for each step of the process. Some ideas were “How to Feed Your Cat,” “How to Choose Pokemon,” and “How to Train a Dog.”
Dr. Montessori believed students should have a chance to encounter nature in all kinds of weather. Montessori believed there were social, emotional, and physical benefits to having recess no matter the temperature or condition (within reason). When the playground is too muddy for a game of soccer to be successful, students find interesting ways to entertain themselves. One of our third year students used some logs and branches he found around the school to build a seesaw. One of our second year students helped him test it out until they found the proper place for the fulcrum.
Our students are excited for the School Dance “Fun”raiser this weekend! During indoor recess this week, we practiced different line dances to prepare ourselves for this Saturday. We practiced the Macarena, the Cha Cha Slide, the Electric Slide, and our own dance moves!

A Peek into Next Week

Next week we are excited to continue our Science Fair work. We will be traveling to the library Monday to collect books. Please make sure your child is dressed for a 15-20 minute walk there and back! Lower Elementary students will make pictographs, discuss the origins of the days of the week, continue studying the Pythagorean Theorem, and begin our Africa Continent Study. Upper Elementary students will review Early Humans Vocabulary, learn about Portmanteaus, and begin the study of viruses!
