Peek In Our Week ::: Mr. John’s Class ::: Week Of March 9, 2020

Line Time:
We had fun this week looking into the world of art.   We went over the primary and secondary colors.  We learned there are different ways to create art such as, drawing with pencils, coloring with crayons, and painting.  We looked at artists such as Michael Angelo, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol.

Cultural Subjects:
Your children can now count to ten in 26 languages (English, Latin, Sign Language, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Greek, Arabic with the Lebanese Dialect, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Swedish, Tagolog, Hebrew, Korean, Hungarian, Irish, Kiswahili, Welsh, Dutch/Flemmish, Polish, Serbo-Croation, Cebuano, Malay, Hindi).

Mr. John’s Thoughts:
You be safe out there and see you soon.  Also, with the toilet paper shortages it is a good time to buy stock in toilet bidets.

Peek In Our Classroom:

She is working on the sound cylinders. This Montessori material helps a child refine his or her auditory senses in a controlled and engaging way. The material ‘isolates one difficulty’ by making the cylinders identical to each other, except for the sound they make when shaken, ultimately practicing sound discrimination.

He created what we call an extension. The bottom line is that Montessori extension lessons help the child to have further experience with the concepts of the materials. Often times the extension activity draws the child towards a more abstracted view of the original concrete concept that was introduced.

She is working on the Geometric Solids. The Geometric Solids are one of many Montessori materials that challenge and shape a child’s stereognostic sense, which is their ability to perceive and understand both the form and nature of objects through touch. AND A PHOTO BOMB

She is working on the 9 lay out. The purpose of this material is to give an overall view of the decimal system and the fact that in base then there may be no more than nine in any one category for both beads and cards.

Peek In Our Week @@@ Mr. John’s Classroom @@@ Week of March 2, 2020

Line Time:
The month started off by going back in time and studying the Ancient Romans.  The Ancient Romans had similar Gods as the Ancient Greeks.  The king of all Gods in Rome was Jupiter and his wife Juno who was the Goddess of Marriage and childbirth.  Pluto was the God of the Underworld, Venus was the Goddess of Love,  Neptune was the God of the Seas, and finally we came across the God of War, Mars.  Did you notice that a lot of these Gods had planets named after them?

Did you know?
I am on a Peter Gabriel kick.  Mostly the 3rd album (aka Melt) and “So”

Peek In The Classroom:

Practical Life was developed by Maria Montessori to assist in developing OCCI (Order, Concentration, Coordination, Independence). Practical Life is simply activities suitable for a child that allows the ability to work with a purpose or in a purposeful way to accomplish developing skills. She is grating a bar of soap and the next step is to WHISK it creating bubbles.

The colored beads representing each number between 1 and 9. Once put in order he will match the appropriate number to the number of the bead furthering the correspondence between quantity and symbol.

The key purpose of the Moveable Alphabet is to prepare children for writing, reading, and spelling. The child’s use of the material progresses from single words, to phrases, and eventually to stories. In this way, the Moveable Alphabet teaches children how to symbolize their own thoughts, and begin to write creatively.

Metal Inset work can help the child to grip and hold the pencil (and hold the pencil upright), refine hand control to steady the pencil, develop movements of straight and curved lines, in preparation for letter formation or a continual line which can assist with cursive.

Trying it again! This time we tried to hold the unpeeled orange down for 10 seconds! Guess what?? It still floats! Why does this happen? The secret?? There is an air bubble in the unpeeled orange that allows it to float.

Peek In Our Week *** Mr. John’s Class *** Week Of February 24, 2020

Line Time:
This week we went back in time and took a look at Ancient Greece and talked about Greek Mythology. The Greek Gods hung out on Mt. Olympus and we learned the King of all Gods was Zeus and if you made him angry he had a lightning bolt in his hand that he would throw at you.  Zeus had a wife named Hera and she was the Goddess of Marriage.  If you were a sailor you dare not make Poseidon angry because he was the the God of the Seas and held a trident (a fork like spear) in his hand.  Zeus had a brother that he sent to the under world and that God was named Hades.  Hades had a pet that was a three headed dog named Cerberus.  We also learned about Pan and Medusa.

Line Time:
We went back in time and learned about Ancient Egypt.  We learned that the leaders or kings were called Pharaohs and when a king died they used a method to preserve them called mummification.  The pharaohs that were mummified look nothing like you see at Halloween or on cartoons.  The ancient Egyptians had a a written language called hieroglyphics which incorporated symbols such as cats, humans, and other daily objects. We also learned that the ancient Egyptians were responsible for building the Great Pyramids and The Sphinx which has the body of a lion and a head of a man.

Why do your fingers wrinkle in water?
For a long time, people thought the water caused skin to swell up and get puffy. Now researchers believe wrinkly fingers could be an autonomic nervous system reaction. … Because it’s easier to pick up wet objects with wrinkly fingers. Wrinkles on your fingers may give you more grip, kind of like treads on a car tire.
