Peek In Our Week ^^^ Mr. John’s Classroom ^^^ Week Of December 9, 2019

Line Time:
We spent the majority of line time practicing for the Christmas Show.  It was a rockin time!  But I could not find the eggnog, or cookies for Santa.  Oh wait…. Score !!!!!!!!

Speaking Of Eggnog (which I love by the way):
While culinary historians debate its exact lineage, most agree
eggnog originated from the early medieval British drink called posset, which was made with hot milk that was curdled with wine or ale and flavored with spices. In the Middle Ages, posset was used as a cold and flu remedy.  Now I want to try posset even if it looks like it is a gelatnis solid.

Cultural Subjects:
Your children can now count to ten in 17 languages (English, Latin, Sign Language, Spanish, German, French, Greek, Japanese, Arabic with the Lebanese dialect, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Swedish, Tagalog, Hebrew, Korean, Hungarian).

Peek In The Classroom:

She has almost completed the fish puzzle which she will learn the different parts of the fish. Also, the little white knobs on the pieces, tracing the puzzle parts, and coloring the traced pieces will help her fine motor skills.

We are following this student through her trek in a Sensitive Period. This is when she has an insatiable attraction to a particular area/subject or particular work in the classroom. She desires to work with Geometric Shapes. Here she has mastered the small hexagon box.

Stretttttcccchhh. This girl is working on the Pink Tower and Brown Stair. She is actually doing an extension of the work. She wanted to know if the Brown Stair is placed on end if it will be the same height as the Pink Tower. Obviously, the Brown Stair is taller than the Pink Tower. Her question is answered.

The cube is made up of a number of colored blocks, which fit together in a specific way. Assembling it uses a child’s fine-motor skills and requires the ability to discriminate between the blocks based on multiple characteristics. Unlike Montessori’s iconic pink tower, for example, the trinomial cube does not isolate only one quality. Some blocks have one color, others have two. Some blocks are cubes, while others are rectangular prisms. While the pink tower blocks vary only in size, the trinomial cube’s blocks vary in color, size, and shape! This makes the trinomial cube a more complex sensorial material, and it requires organized thinking to master.

Line Time:
We spent the majority of line time practicing for the Christmas Show.  It is going to be a rockin time

December Birthdays:
The Montessori classroom is comprised of 3 year old to 6 year old students.  Here are our newest 4 and 5 year old students.

Pastor Kirk Reads:
Pastor Kirk read a story how one tree in the Carpathian Mountains helps several animals in the forest.  Fun Fact…  My grandmother’s village in Slovakia was at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. One student blurted that that fact was not fun.

What’s The Diff?
What is the difference between bologna and baloney?

Bologna is the name of a city in Italy, pronounced “boh-LOAN-ya.” But although the sausage named after the city in English is spelled the same, it is pronounced “buh-LOAN-ee” and is often spelled baloney. Either spelling is acceptable for the sliced meat product.  P.S. I love fried bologna/baloney!!!

This student traced, colored, and labeled the Continent Puzzle Map.

This kindergarten student is working in her binder. Specifically she is hworking on her 100 page. Her first page is from 1 to 100 then 101 to 200 and so on. Let’s see how far she gets at the end of the school year.

Theses students are working on an Albanesi Assessment. This assessment it a bridge between Montessori tracking and traditional education grading.

Peek In Our Week *** Mr. John’s Class *** Week Of November 18, 2019

Line Time:
This week we talked about pilgrims and how they came to the New World on the ship called the Mayflower.  It was a long journey and when they finally got there they had to hunt for their food and build their own shelter.  The children were surprised that there was not a Target to get blankets, Giant Eagle to get food, Home Depot to get building materials.  We learned that the first Thanksgiving probably didn’t have turkey but instead had pheasant, eel, and fish.  As a side note (didn’t discuss in class) there was no Black Friday.

November Birthday:
A Montessori classroom is comprised of children ages 3 years of age to 6 years of age.  Here is our newest four year old.

What’s The Diff?:
What is the difference between seeing a concert and seeing a show?  I am thinking when you use the term “show” it is a small, intimate venue with about 200 of your closest friends (Musica, Peobody’s Down Under).  A concert most likely will be held in a venue about 2,000+ people (Blossom, The Q).  As you can tell I like “shows”.  Some pics as I was leaning onto the stage of the last two “shows” I attended. lol.  One last thing are you seeing a group or a band?

Cultural Subjects:
Your children can now count to ten in 17 languages (English, Latin, Sign Language, Spanish, German, French, Greek, Japanese, Arabic with the Lebanese dialect, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Swedish, Tagalog, Hebrew, Korean, Hungarian).

Peek In The Classroom:

These friends are working on the continent puzzle map. They are tracing, labeling, and coloring the seven continents. This work not only will learn help them with geography

This boy is working on a decimal work found in the math area. This work will introduce the child to the concept of the decimal system (10’s). To make the child familiar with the names and relative sizes of the columns of units, tens, hundreds, and thousands. With this work I tell the children the magic number is “10”. for example ten units equals one ten, ten tens equal one hundred, 10 hundreds equals on thousand.

This girl is diligently working on the Metal Insets. Metal Inset work can help the child to; Grip and hold the pencil (and hold the pencil upright) Refine hand control to steady the pencil. Develop movements of straight and curved lines, in preparation for letter formation or a continual line which can assist with cursive.

This girl is in a stage we call a sensitive period. Montessori sensitive periods refer to a period of time when a child’s interests are focused on developing a particular skill or knowledge area. During this time Maria Montessori describes as the child’s absorbent mind. This student has been working on Geometry for the last three weeks. We will track her interest and see how far she goes in this area.

Peek In Our Week ### Mr. John’s Class ### Week Of November 11, 2019

Line Time:
Dinosaurs-
We traveled back in time and discovered some fascinating things about certain dinosaurs.  We learned that dinosaurs no longer exist and that they are extinct.  We know dinosaurs exist because scientist found their bones or fossils.  From these fossil we saw that some teeth were long and sharp to tear flesh from it’s prey which belonged to meat eaters or carnivores (T Rex).  Some teeth were flat for grinding plants, leaves, and branches and belonged to plant eaters or herbivores (Brachiosauras).

Who remembers Dino from The Flintstones?

Did You Know:
Catsup and
Ketchup are two different spellings of the same condiment.  These words have the same meanings and are simply alternate spellings. Therefore, both are correct. Catsup is a condiment and is the less popular spelling. Ketchup is also a condiment and is the more popular spelling, which, today, is a westernized version of a condiment first introduced to European traders in the late 17th century.  Ketchup was originally a paste made from fermented fish guts (yes, it’s come a long way).

Cultural Subjects:
Your children can now count to ten in 16 languages (English, Latin, Sign Language, Spanish, German, French, Greek, Japanese, Arabic with the Lebanese dialect, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Swedish, Tagalog, Hebrew, Korean).

Peek In The Classroom:

This boy is working on the Spindle Box found in the Math area. The Spindle Boxes have important purposes of reinforcing the idea that the symbols represent certain quantities of separate objects, introducing the concept of zero and its symbol, and reinforcing the sequence of the numerals. The traditional spindle boxes are two boxes divided into five compartments each which includes numbers from 0 to 9.

This student is working on the Color Bead Bars. This activity is found in the Math area. The colored bead stair is a quintessential Montessori math material because it has SO many different mathematical benefits. The youngest child in primary all the way through upper elementary learns one-to-one correspondence, connecting quantity to symbol, square roots and cubes, basic operations, and complex algebraic equations.

This girl is working on her shapes. She has learned and can identify parallelogram and trapazoids, and she knows what equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles are.

This student is working on the Binomial Cube that is found in the Sensorial area. The Binomial Cube is one of those amazing Montessori materials that introduces abstract math concept to children as young as 4 without them even knowing it. The early sensorial experience with the cube inspires them again at age 8 or 9 when they use the cube for algebra. The material provides the all important bridge between concrete and abstract thinking and the child develops a much deeper understanding of the math. One of these days I will include the mathmatical formula.
