A Peek At Our Week – Aspen – 09/19/22-09/23/22 All About Apples!

This week it was all about apples in Aspen! We learned all about the life cycle of an apple, where they grow, how they grow, and practiced labeling the parts of an apple. The Aspen class engaged in a variety of follow-up activities such as apple slicing, apple classification, labeling the parts of an apple, and exploration/observation of apples with our botany tray. At the same time, we took the opportunity to learn about fractions and used apples to demonstrate whole, half, and one -fourth. After learning about fractions, the Aspen children took turns learning how to safely slice apples. We then used their sliced apples to create apple prints for an extra special art project with Ms. Lindsey. Aspen also created their own taste testing science experiment by seeing if Red Apples, Green Apples, and Yellow Apples taste different! The Aspen children discovered that each type of apple had its own distinct taste. Ask your child that type of apple was their favorite!

The kindergarteners have continued their exploration of Geography and North America by focusing on Ohio and the States that surround it. The kindergarteners also learned many interesting Ohio facts and practiced identifying states on a map. In Reading Workshop, kindergarteners continued their lessons on phonics, identifying sound clues, and combining sound clues together. The Chickadee Reading group practiced the above and played the “Change It” game. We wrote words on a dry-erase board and then changed one of the sounds to see if we could create a new word! Chickadees also practiced slowing down and paying attention to each letter sound in a word. We all tried very hard to not get tricked by paying close attention to each sound! The Cardinals Group practiced the above a well, but they also focused on sight words and words that don’t always follow your typical language rules. The Cardinals now know five sight words: of , the , and , a, and once (a super silly word that does not follow the rules having an o making a w sound)! The Cardinals also practiced tapping out their sight words and then worked on identifying colors words. In Writers Workshop the kindergarteners continued creating their own books and some even started a brand new book! Each kindergartner received instruction involving the proper formation of the cursive letter r. They then applied what they learned independently through various writing activities in Writer’s Workshop

Next week our thematic topic will be color! We are going to explore the world of color by learning the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors; we will discuss the gradation of colors (shades); we will engage in color mixing activities; and we will investigate the colors used in various works of art.

Completing patterns using apples and then creating our own apple patterns.

Washing apples! Practicing the concepts of order and sequence learning life skills!

Creating apple prints from the apples we sliced during our fractions lesson. Note the pincer grasp being used to hold the apple! Each Practical Life activity is designed to indirectly prepare the hand for future handwriting activities!

More fun making apple prints!
Matching Uppercase and Lowercase print letters.

Tweezing Sunflower Seeds at the Peace Table! A great way to relax and refocus!

Line Time:
Living and Non-Living-  This week we talked about living and non-living things. Your children now know what makes a living thing.  All living things reproduce, grow, eat or take in nutrients, breathe or exchange gases, and need water. We are all in agreement that plants, animals, trees, grass, are living things!  My shoe is not a living thing nor am I at 5:00 am.  Some of the parents are not living until they have had their coffee.  My youngest son’s shoes may or may not be living.  I do not get close enough to tell due to the smell and I may have seen them move on their own….  Boys that are 16 years old, SMH.

Fun Fact:
People used to say “prunes” instead of “cheese” when having their pictures taken

In the 1840s, a big—dare I say, cheesy—grin was seen as childish, so one London photographer told people to say “prunes” to keep their mouths taut. And that look predated today’s “fish face”

Peek In The Classroom:

This student is working on the Number rods found in the Math area. The Number Rods help children learn the names of numbers and their sequence and learn to correctly associate between the spoken number and its quantity. Children grow to understand that each rod represents a unique quantity and that each number is represented by a single object as a whole, separate from others.
This student is rolling her work mat. These mats are an integral part of Montessori learning. A simple task like rolling and unrolling mats is one of the first skills taught to new students. Children learn this intentional skill quickly, building a child’s confidence in their ability to perform classroom tasks early on.
It is in the Practical Life area where children learn the foundation for all other areas of the classroom, what you may have heard us refer to as O-C-C-I, which stands for orderconcentration, coordination and independence.  While the activities may appear simple, they are highly purposeful, and can be quite complicated with many steps.  It is in Practical Life children learn the basics of self-care, care of the environment, and activities that encompass everyday living, or “domestic curriculum.”
To make the child familiar with the different categories of numbers, especially with regard to reading the symbols. To give the child the wording of large numbers For the hierarchy of numbers, that is, that while the significant figure are always from 1 to 9, it is the place they occupy in the complex number which gives them the importance of 1, 10, 100 or 1000. For the fact that in a large number made up of two or more categories, the zero merely shows an empty place. That is, that one of the categories is lacking (in 1065, for instance, the hundreds are missing). For the fact that only 9 of each category are necessary to form any number.

Academic Enrichment aka Kindergarten:
Since we live in the great state of Ohio I felt it was needed to become familiar with the states that surround our home state. We started with Ohio which is the Buckeye State and the abbreviation is OH.  We then looked at the state to the east of us named Pennsylvania (not Transylvania) which is called the Keystone State and the abbreviation is PA. We traveled south and discovered West Virginia which is the Mountain State and the abbreviation is WV. Moving to the west we ran into Kentucky which is the Blue Grass State and the abbreviation is KY.  Moving more westward is Indiana or the Hoosier State (what is a Hoosier anyway?) and the abbreviation is IN.  To my chagrin I introduced the students to TSUN.  I can not bring myself to even say the name….  xichigan  wolverine state.

Let us end not on a low note like the last sentence in the previous paragraph and present the “official” things for the state of Ohio…

Mammal: White Tail Deer
Fossil: Trilobite
Tree: Buckeye
Bird: Cardinal
Flower: Red Carnation
Drink: Tomato Juice
Rock Song: Hang On Sloopy

Peek into the Cherry Blossom Classroom – week of 9/12/22

Our Focus Lesson:

This week we learned about what makes something Living or Non Living. We know that Living things needs food, water, and clean air. Living things also change or grow, can move on their own, and can reproduce. We really enjoyed thinking of all of the living things we know of and looking for nonliving things in our classroom.

Preschool Lesson:

Our younger Blossoms studied “Me in the World” this week with Ms. Sam. We also made books to show where we live, from our planet Earth, all the way to our school.

We found “our Ohio” on the map of the United States of America!

Kindergarten Lesson:

Our older Blossoms were introduced to the continent of North America this week with Mr. John in Kindergarten Lesson. They practiced labeling the countries of this continent and the oceans that surround it. In Reader’s Workshop, the Kindergarteners continued being “sound detectives” to practice their reading skills. In Writer’s Workshop, our young writers practiced stretching out words like a rubber band and writing down the sounds that they hear!

Check out these writers!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday to our newest 5 year old!

What are we working on in the classroom?

Our Kindergarteners practiced building words with the Moveable Alphabet this week. We worked on “stretching our words out like rubber bands to hear the sounds!”
Our older Preschool Students worked with our Cards and Counters this week. They are doing a wonderful job counting out one counter at a time until they reach the number.

Teachable Moments!

Our Monarch Butterfly hatched this week, and we let him go on Tuesday. This butterfly is going to fly all the way to Mexico!

A Peek At Our Week- Aspen- 09/12/22-9/16/22 – “Treely” Awesome Trees!

This week Aspen learned all about trees! It was “treely” awesome! Aspen learned all about the importance of trees, the names of each part of a tree, the function of each part of a tree, and began tree classification work. During group lesson we discovered that humans and trees need each other and have a symbiotic relationship! Trees give us oxygen, and we provide carbon dioxide for the trees! During group lessons we looked at the function of each part in detail and then engaged in follow up work labeling our tree puzzle. At the same time, some of the Aspen children traced our tree puzzle and created their own trees! Ms. Lindsey also showed the Aspen children how to make leaf rubbings and invited the Aspen children to bring in leaves that they find on the ground. Aspen children should not pull leaves off a tree! We learned that the leaves are the food factories of the tree. Trees are autrophs (they make their own food) and through photosynthesis they provide nourishment for the tree. If we rip leaves off of trees they will not be able to do their job, and the tree will not grow! We also took a look at the inside of a tree with Mr. John’s science center tree box, and we learned about the rings inside a tree. Ask your child about what they discovered about tree rings!

This week during Kindergarten Workshop the kindergarteners began their North American cultural lessons, learning the locations and names of the countries in North America. They used the North American puzzle map to explore our continent and engaged in a variety of follow-up lessons. In Reading Workshop our Kindergarten students continued their exploration of phonics and our Alphabet. We discussed the science behind reading and how the brain uses phonics to connect sounds. We discovered that you can group sounds together to form words. Some phonic groupings make sense and others are complete nonsense. We then played around with phonics and created our own groupings of sounds! We came up with some fun sound groupings! Parents, encourage your children to engage in word play with phonetic sounds (beginning sounds, ending sounds, rhyming words, and thinking of words with similar sounds). In Writing Workshop the kindergarteners were working on stretching out letters (words) to write them, practicing our fine motor and movements needed to form our letters. Reading Workshop also practiced stretching out sound groupings while reading them by sounding them out slowly and then quickly. Just like in handwriting, we payed attention to the movements needed to form a letter. Reading Group payed attention to the movements of our mouth and tongue when sounding out letters.

Next week our thematic topic is All About Apples! We will have bushels of fun apple themed activities, some taste testing (what kind of apples do we like best), and artistic fun with apples! Have a great weekend!

Labeling and coloring the parts of a tree!

Superimposed Geometric Figures! Exploration of the visual sense and the application of geometric knowledge and the acquisition of geometrical language.

Exploring with the Hexagonal Constructive Triangles activity! Learning the names of triangles while exploring the composition of shape and form.

A Peek At Our Week – Aspen- 09/05/22- 09/09/22 – Continental Culture!

This week in Aspen it was all about the continents! Aspen has spent the week learning the names and locations of all seven continents. We also used our Geography Envelopes and Geography Cards to explore the culture of each continent! We studied animals, biomes, landforms, and people from each continent. At the same time, we learned all about where we live from largest to smallest; for example, planet, continent, country, state, city, street, house! The children also engaged in a variety of cultural follow up activities involving identifying the names and locations of the continents, countries, and states. It was so much fun learning about the world around us!

The Aspen children also had their very first library time with the very creative and amazing Ms. Lindsey! During library time, we learned how to care for books by handling them respectfully and carefully. We read the book The Children Who Loved Books by Peter Carnavas. Then we sang the song, “I Like to Read” as we danced and traveled to far away places! We learned that through books we can be transported to magical places and be anything we want! We then read Kitty Kat, Kitty Kat, Where Have You Been? as we traveled to Europe and visited Paris! Ask your child about their library experience and their French vocabulary word: gateaux! All of the Aspen children mentioned how much they love to eat gateaux!

Kindergarten students continued their geography lessons with Mr. John as they explored our world in depth and in more detail. During Readers Workshop the kindergarteners reviewed phonics and played some phonics games. We practiced our detective skills and learned that sometimes books and words will try and trick us by changing sounds in the middle or end of a word. A good Sound Detective looks at each sound in a word. In Writers Workshop the kindergarteners practiced proper letter formation and continued to create their booklets where they get to be both the author and illustrator.

Next week the thematic lesson will be trees! We will learn why trees are so important, discuss the names and the functions of each part of a tree, and will be introduced to a variety of follow-up tree themed classification activities!

Working on coloring a continent map while practicing research skills.
Creating my own Continent Map by tracing the continent puzzle pieces.

Healthy Habits-
This week we learned how stay healthy.  We learned that we need to wash our hands thoroughly and keep our whole bodies clean by taking shower, baths, washing our hair, and brushing our teeth.  We now know how long to wash our hands by singing the ABC’s which is a good idea but we decided it would be too difficult to sing while brushing out teeth. Another way to keep healthy is to cover our sneezes and coughs with the inside of our elbow to trap germs from flying all over the place. Another healthy habit is to get enough sleep to rest our bodies and our minds. Exercise such as running, biking, climbing, and even walking leads to a healthy body and mind.  We discovered if we eat healthy food like fruits, vegetables, protein, and limited sweets that is good for our bodies.  More on that next week.

He is working on the Trinomial Cube found in the Sensorial area. The direct aim of the binomial and trinomial cubes is for the child to practice the steps to properly disassemble and build the cube, while refining dexterity and visual acuity.
The Number Rods also help children learn the names of numbers and their sequence and learn to correctly associate between the spoken number and its quantity. Children grow to understand that each rod represents a unique quantity and that each number is represented by a single object as a whole, separate from others.
The constructive triangles are used to demonstrate that all plane geometric figures can be constructed from triangles.
The direct purpose of the Sandpaper Numbers is to teach children the symbols that represent each number, allowing them to visually identify any number from 0 – 9. In Montessori education this is specifically taught separately to counting from 0 – 9, where children often fall back on rote memorization.

Our Focus Topic:

This week we learned all about our 5 Senses! Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching! We know that we use our 5 senses to explore the world around us every day. We use our sense of seeing when we match our matching cards or complete patterns in Language. We use our sense of hearing to match Sound Cylinders in Sensorial. We use our sense of touching to match our fabric box with a blindfold and to feel different temperatures with the Thermic Tablets. But our favorite activities this week were smelling spices and tasting foods! We took turns voting if we liked the smells and tastes!

Do we like the smell of cumin?
We loved the sour taste of lemon!

Preschool Lesson:

Our younger Blossoms learned about Emotions this week with Ms. Sam! We talked about feeling words, showed feelings on our faces, and were introduced to our new Feeling Pages in the classroom. Whenever we are having big feelings we can take a Feeling Page, color the feeling, and draw a picture of why on the back! These pages will come home in folders and can be a great start for conversations at home!

How are you feeling today?
Ms. Sam was feeling happy to be at school with friends!

Kindergarten Lesson:

Our older Blossoms continued their study on Cardinal Directions with Mr. John this week, as well as added information about hemispheres. They were very proud to tell us about the Equator and the Prime Meridian.

Reader’s Workshop is working on either beginning sounds or picture to word matching, while in Writer’s Workshop students are creating a class book about the playground as well as their individual books. In Handwriting, students learned how to form lowercase i and t in cursive.

A Peek At Our Week- Aspen- 08/29/22-09/02/22 Reasons for Seasons!

This week in Aspen it was all about seasons! The Aspen class began our Seasons Lesson by learning about day and night. We discovered that our earth rotates (spins) on its axis, and as a result, we get daytime and nighttime! We were amazed when we found out that when we have day time here, there are children in other parts of the world having night time; therefore, when we are at school, children in other places are having dinner or even sleeping!! Aspen then learned that as our Earth rotates, it tilts. This tilt affects how much direct sunlight different areas receive, and as a result, we get our seasons! The more direct sunlight the Earth receives, the warmer/hotter the weather. On the other hand, the less direct sunlight, the cooler/colder the weather! Finally, we discussed the differences between the seasons in Ohio! Did you know that some places don’t have four seasons? Some places have only two! Or they have mild climate changes!

Throughout our exploration of seasons, we got to experiment with our painted globe and a flashlight! With this activity, we got to observe our key words axis, rotation, and orbit first hand. Our flashlight acted as the sun, and we helped rotate the Earth (painted globe), experiencing day/night and the changing seasons. We also got to take turns being the Earth, orbiting around the sun and rotating and tilting to represent how old we are. It sure was a fun filled week in Aspen!

In Kindergarten lesson, the kindergarten students have been learning about the continents and the concept of direction. They have been learning the names and location of each continent as well as the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. During Readers Workshop we discussed that reading is actually a science and as “Sound Detectives,” it is our job to find the clues and experiment putting sounds together. Sometimes, we will create groupings of sounds that make sense when they are put together, and sometimes our groups of sounds will be nonsense or silly! It is up to the Sound Detectives to use their clues! Our Readers Workshop is split into two groups: the Cardinals and the Chickadees. This week the Chickadees read the books Alphabet City and The Alphabet’s Alphabets and practiced their detective skills sounding out letters. The Cardinals also read the book The Alphabet’s Alphabet and focused on the formation of how each sound (letter) is formed. The Cardinals also began combining sounds to form words and were introduced to the concept of phonograms. In Writers Workshop both group began creating their very own book and worked on proper letter formation, becoming writers! What a busy and fun week these kindergarteners had!

Next week the Aspen thematic topic is all about Continents! The Aspen class will be introduced to the Continent Puzzle Map, The Sandpaper Globe, The Painted Globe, The Geography Envelopes, and The Continent Boxes. Aspen will learn the names and location of continents, be introduced to the terms land, water, continent and Ocean, and will begin exploring the world and culture around them with the Geography Envelopes and Continent Boxes! See you next week!

Peek into the Cherry Blossom Classroom – week of 8/29/22

Our Focus Topic:

This week we learned about Sunflowers! We discussed the life cycle of a sunflower, and loved learning that the sunflower grows the seeds in the center of the flower. We also found it very interesting that the sunflower will follow the sun across the sky. We talked about the parts of a sunflower, and one of our friends brought in a real sunflower for us to observe!

We used three part cards, also know as nomenclature cards, to discuss the parts of a sunflower. We were lucky enough to observe the parts on a real sunflower too!
Observing a sunflower and sunflower seeds with a magnifying glass in our Science area!
We wrapped up our Sunflower study by drawing along with Art for Kids Hub!

Preschool Lesson

Our younger Blossoms continued talking about the ocean and beach this week by reading books about the different animals you would find there and voting for their favorite sea creature! They also created name puzzles this week to practice name recognition!

Sharks were the favorite sea creature in the Cherry Blossom class!

Kindergarten Lesson

Our older Blossoms learned all about cardinal directions this week with Mr. John. They learned to Never Eat Soggy Worms and labeled the directions on their homework!

Reader’s Workshop with Ms. Kelley and Writer’s Workshop with Ms. Tonya started this week! Our readers were introduced to their Book Buddy Bags that will be filled with books and other reading activities for the children to work on. Our writers started writing books already! Their first book is all about something they know a lot about, most of the children chose their pets!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

A very Happy Birthday to our newest 5 year old!

What are we working on in the classroom?

This Kindergarten student is learning how to write words in cursive. She began with individual letters and letter blends last year, and is now writing words that she finds in her reading work!
Our Second Year Preschoolers are working hard on their Quantity and Symbols with the Spindle Box. Most of these students are comfortable with numerals 0-5, so we are now learning 6-9 by counting out the appropriate amount of spindles and putting them in the correct section!
Our First Year Preschoolers are being introduced to our Practical Life and Sensorial works in the classroom. This student is using the Knobbed Cylinders to learn the descriptive words of thick and thin with this block.

Teachable Moments this week…

We found a grasshopper friend outside on the playground this week! We were able to observe the different parts of the grasshopper and watch him hop away!
One of our friends spotted this huge preying mantis outside of our classroom window this week. Ms. Tonya quickly ran outside to catch him so we could take a closer look! Then we let him go!

Ground Rules:
Week Two… Everything is fine!  We continued learning about the ground rules in our classroom.  We learned the expected behaviors for work time and were introduced to new work trays in the Practical Life area so that we can strengthen our fine motor skills.  We learned how to get a teacher’s attention by putting a hand on the teachers shoulder instead of yelling across the room. We have been practicing when a teacher calls a student’s name they reply “Yes, Mr. John?” instead of “what?” or “ya?”

We also have been practicing placing shoes and slippers nicely on the their mat.

I expect this every time they change shoes/slippers.
