August/September 2015 Newsletter

20150910_141345

We started off our school year focusing on grace and courtesy to teach and fulfill our student’s innate need for order. Every student has a need to know and to absorb the social structures in order to be more at ease in their environment. Grace and courtesy lessons give the student the vocabulary, actions, and steps required for them to build their awareness and responsiveness of those around them. We worked on walking in the classroom, using our inside voices while in the school building, using kind words to one another, using safe hands, how to clean up our area when we are done working and how to use our words to express our feelings.

The third week of school we talked and learned about community helpers. We had many parents, family members and friends volunteer to come in and talk to the children. They briefly described their occupation, they talked about where they work, what they wear, tools they use, and tasks they perform. I would like to thank all of the volunteers that came into the classroom! It was a wonderful learning experience for both the students and teachers!

The fourth week of school we discussed families, each student has a chance to share their family tree with their friends. Their family trees included their name, parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. The students also brought pictures of their families either on the family tree or hard copies for the children to share with their friends. The children enjoyed learning more about their friends and where they came from. It was great to see the students discover the differences and similarities in all of the families and accept every family for who they are.

The fifth week of September we talked about feelings and emotions. The students brainstormed things they could do when they were angry, happy, sad, frustrated, and excited. Then they discussed with one another whether the reaction they came up with was a good choice or a bad choice. The students did a great job learning how to manage their emotions. We role played how to process, identify and appropriately express their emotions as much as possible. After a few days of talking about feeling and emotions it was great to hear the students tell their friends what they were feeling and why on their own.

The last week of September we explored the five senses of touch, sight, smell, taste and hearing. During this week the students got a chance to identify the different senses. Compare and classify items using their sense.

Kindergarten

We kicked off Kindergarten with a lot of Geography. The students learned about the seven continents, fun facts about the continents, and a few countries in each continent. The students became very familiar with the cardinal directions, the equator, the prime meridian, and the hemispheres. We took a look at our home state of Ohio and the surrounding states (their abbreviation and nickname). Make sure you ask your child all about Ohio! They will be able to tell you that the cardinal is the official bird, scarlet carnation the official flower, lady bug is the official insect, and tomato juice is the official drink. You will want to contact a company like Mid-Atlantic Wildlife Control that handles groundhog control in your city. They learned how we are the buckeye state and that the official rock and roll song is Hang on Sloopy.

Art
By: Ms. Faith

The first month of school the students learned many new and exciting things about their classroom, teachers, and friends. They also discovered how much fun art class is with Ms. Michele. Throughout the month, students were taught the rules and procedures for different art materials. To start off the first lesson, Ms. Michele discussed what an artist is and we decided that they create things. The students then made an Eric Carle inspired tissue paper butterfly using shapes cut out of tissue paper, coloring over top using crayon rubbings over different textures, and then gluing the shapes to create a beautiful butterfly. The next lesson was all about primary colors. There are three primary colors and they are red, blue, and yellow. The students then created their house by gluing black construction paper onto paper and then used primary colors to paint their houses. Ms. Michele showed the class works from Piet Mondrain who is best known for painting with lines and primary colors. Our third lesson was all about patterns. The class learned what a pattern is and practice making patters before creating their own flowers using oil pastels and filling them with different colors and patterns. Ms. Michele showed the students how paintings of flowers have changed over the years from realistic to more abstract by looking at works from Rembrandt, Vincent Van Gough, and Andy Warhol.

We cannot overstate the necessity that air conditioning cincinnati oh systems are regularly maintained.

During the fourth week, the little artists learned about secondary colors, which are the colors that primary colors make when mixed. We learned about a local artist, Don Drumm who is know for his sun sculptures, so the students got to make sun, sun catchers using Modge Podge mixed with food coloring on clear plastic. The colors blend together and when they are dry, the sunlight shines beautifully through. To end the month, we got to create shape animals using shapes cut out of construction paper and glued together on another piece of paper. The inspiration for this piece comes from an artist named Charlie Harper. He created wildlife prints using simple shapes. The students love getting to use the art materials and learn how talented they are. We can’t wait to see what next month’s art lessons will bring.

Music
By: Ms. Faith

All the students get so excited when it’s music day and it’s no wonder why. Ms. Lisa brings music and movement to their lives once a week. In music class, the little musicians learn how to use different musical instruments such as tambourines, egg shakers, and rhythm sticks. Ms. Lisa also teaches musical terms and plays games with the class to help them remember the term. So far, we have learned Adagio which means slow, Allegro, which means fast, Piano which means soft, and Forte which means loud. Our music teacher brings puppet friends with her and makes them move slow or fast and sing loud or soft to help the students guess the musical term. Every class, the kids get to sing to the puppet friend and either sing in a Piano or Forte voice. The students also learn many valuable life lessons like patience and following directions through music class. They have to learn how to use the instrument properly and how to wait for Ms. Lisa to tell them when they can pick their instruments up. It’s amazing to see how much the students improve over the school year with their rhythmic skills and ability to use the materials. Throughout the week, students will ask when Ms. Lisa is coming because they love learning about music with her.

Science
By: Ms. Faith

For our first science experiment of the year we made explosive chalk with cornstarch, water and food coloring. We added an alka seltzer which made it pop and send the sidewalk chalk bursting out, creating beautiful chalk art.

The second week we put different candy bars in a bowl of water, some of them sank and floated. We discovered that if something is more dense than water, it sinks. Snickers will sink, but a 3 Musketeers bar will not because it contains trapped air, so it’s less dense than water.

20150828_092740 GLZ7Tcgp6MXtzcERhP8P0LGt92sbZ3wyE7XZkJQCVL0

The third week we made a bottle rocket using a 2 litter, cork, water and bike pump.

20150909_090918 Chy1NxpbARsx6oyXfbSv54uFBFJ190v5sFTEVFSM5ig

The fourth week we soaked an egg in vinegar and highlighter. The eggshell dissolved and a glowing effect occurred because the vitamins are fluorescent. When the eggshell dissolved the membrane of the egg became permeable so some amount of the glowing vinegar infused the egg, causing it to glow!

The last week of September we made ice grow by putting colored water in the freezer until it got slushy like. We then dumped the water on ice cubes keeping the stream of water going moving it around a bit and our ice grew taller.

Ms. Kate’s August/September 2015 Newsletter

Welcome back everyone! I can’t believe how fast summer flew by and the new school year is in session again. Thanks so much for those who came to “Meet the Teacher Night.” It was wonderful seeing the returning students and parents and meeting all of our new families. The first month was filled with lessons on respect, friendship, family, and all about ourselves.

IMG_20150928_130644IMG_20150916_094400

The first week the classroom was full of laughter and excitement. During our line time we discussed the rules of the classroom: that we will always respect each other, we will try our best, we are a team, we learn from our mistakes, we create, and we will always celebrate each others successes. Throughout this month the children have been praising one another during work time and helping each other when they see someone using a word the wrong way. It has been a pleasure seeing and hearing the children remembering all of the rules we have gone over. Also, during the first week I have been introducing different words little by little to the children. I want the children to feel comfortable and have an understanding of the different words when they are using them.

IMG_20150825_1329172015-08-24 08.18.08

Using the word “please,” “thank you,” “excuse me,” and “I’m sorry” were the lessons we learned while we were discussing the topic of respect. For the first lesson, we lead a discussion about when we should say “please” and why it is important to use it. The children then created a word poem based on each letter within the word “please”. Throughout the week, the children created word poems and sentences while using the other kindness words. The children have been working hard practicing using our kindness words.

IMG_20150824_141134  IMG_20150825_132636

The second week we focused on friendship. We started out by discussing the meaning of being a good friend and what qualities are in a good friend. We then read the book Do You Want To Be My Friend? By Eric Carle. The children discussed the mouse’s search for a good friend and what qualities were in each friend. After the story the children were able to create a friendship chain. The second lesson was called The Good Friends Chart. We read a friendship book and then brain stormed together about all the qualities of a good friend and what that means. Giovanni said, “ I want someone who is nice.” Annelise then said “ I want someone who is funny” and Anelise said “I want someone who will listen to me.” After everyone shared their qualities we placed our answers on the chart paper . Throughout the week the children learned how playing together can foster friendships and build a community. The children then played a game called “ The Blob.” The children had to work together by linking arms and hands to capture the other friends. On the last day, our class created a “Friendship Web.” The children were able to discuss what friends should sound like when they are together, how it feels when friends are together, what it looks like when friends are together, and the qualities in a friend.

IMG_20150827_100235IMG_20150902_100557

The third week we discussed “All About Me.” We started out by reading the book Stand Tall Mary Lou Melon . We then talked about the differences and similarities in everyone’s appearance. We then created a graph about hair and eye color. The children were able to go around the room and see who had brown, black, red, or blonde hair. They did the same for eye color. The children were then able to see how everyone’s’ appearance is not the same. The next lesson the children created a bar graph about everyone’s birthday. I read the book On The Day You Were Born. We talked about how everyone’s birthday is different and that makes us unique and special. The children then decorated their own birthday cupcake. Throughout the week we made an “I’m Special Book” and played a “ How Do You Feel” game. We also had so much fun creating an “I Like” collage out of magazines, and a how many letters in my name chart.

IMG_20150915_131759IMG_20150917_092620

The last week was all about our families. We first lead a discussion on what they think a family is. Teagan said, “ My mommy and daddy.” Ella said, “My sister, mommy and daddy.” Anelise said “ My Grammy.” During the week we discussed how not all families are the same, the different houses & places families live, the tradition families celebrate, and the special things that we love doing with our family. During this week the children and families created their own family trees. On the last day, the children were able to stand up at line time and share their family tree amongst their friends. It was so wonderful to see the children and their parents work and come together to create something so awesome!

Again, this has been such a wonderful first month back to school. I look forward to the upcoming months with all of you as we head into fall and winter.

Academic Enrichment (Group Lesson with all Kindergartners):
Led by Mr. John

Our Academic Enrichment time is daily from 12:00-1:00pm.  This time is specifically designed for our Kindergarten students to join together as a group to work and progress through the advanced materials and lessons in the Montessori primary curriculum. Throughout the school day in their classroom they are still working individually with their classroom teacher on these and other materials at their level.

The first week of school, kindergarten students started out learning about the these things called continents. There are seven of them and each has a fun fact and countries within them.  Did you know (without googling) Central America is not a continent?  My kindergarten students do!  Next we discovered that the Earth has something called cardinal directions(North, South, East, and West) or N,E,S,W=Never Eat Soggy Waffles.  We went further and found you can get more specific directions by stating something is northeast, or southwest.  With that under or belts I told the students that there are two imaginary lines that are on the Earth.  The Prime Meridian and the Equator.  If you go where these two imaginary lines are you will NOT fine a painted line.  But these lines have a purpose to divide the Earth into hemispheres.

20150831_123714

We took a closer look at North America(because this is continent in which we live).  We discussed the three major countries of Mexico, USA, and Canada, the location of the Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and Hudson Bay.  Since we live in the state of Ohio we learned some fun facts about this great state.  The official things such as the bird, mammal, and fossil to name a few.  The K-Kids now know the surrounding states, their nickname, and abbreviation.  Ending the month we broke down where we live from biggest to smallest….  From the galaxy of The Milky Way to our individual street addresses (street not email). And everything in between!

In the beginning of our group lesson, we count to 10 in eight different languages(English, Latin, Spanish, German, French, Greek, and Japanese).  The kindergarten students can count in English, Latin, Spanish, German, French, Greek, Japanese, and Arabic with the Lebanese dialect.  Our goal is to reach over twenty languages.

I Want To Be Sedated…

20150823_185434-1

Why is that old Ramone’s song going through my head?  I don’t know.  Is it because after three months of Summer hibernation, staying up late (by late, I mean 10 pm, woo hoo) and sleeping in (to 7:30am, woo hoo again), binge watching TV shows, living life at a snail’s pace, and having minimal work responsibilities, I am thrown into going to bed at 8 pm, waking at 5 am, wondering into the building at 6 am.  I await for the rush of students descending upon the school. The student part I love, it is my sleep schedule that has me a little cheesed off.  But, the truth is, I would not have it any other way!

20150916_092905       20150918_134313o

Line Time Lessons:
We started the school year the same way we always do by learning the ground rules for the classroom.  Walking feet in the classroom, listening ears, hands and bodies to ourselves, and my favorite; treat people with respect.  The older students demonstrated to the class and younger students how to unroll and roll a mat, how to walk around a mat, how to walk the line.  It is a pleasure seeing the older students teaching the younger students. Several mice have also joined our classroom (in a cage not running rampant throughout the building).

20150918_132659  20150929_140422

We then learned how to keep our bodies healthy.  We wash our hands to get rid of the germs.  Everyone has germs on them but they are sooooooooo small you can not see them but they are still there.  We cover our sneezes and coughs on the inside of our elbows.  Eating healthy is important just as exersising, getting enough sleep, and brushing our teeth. Eating a healthy diet was a good segway into tour next lesson on food groups.  We learned about grains/cereals, fruits/veggies, meat/protein, dairy(my fave), and sweets/fats. Since we all need to eat to “live” we talked about what it is that makes a bird living and my shoe non-living.  We discussed that living things eat/take in nourishment, breathe/exchange gases, grow, and reproduce. After our lesson on living things we moved on to discussing the different kind of animals there are.  We started with the mammal because WE are mammals!  We are warm blooded, vertebrates, have hair or fur, are live bearers, and we drink mother’s milk when young (not pizza or pop tarts)!

Some of you may not be aware, that Absorbent Minds Montessori School has a relationship with the University of Akron where we have student teachers observe and, in my class, they participate in the daily activities in my room.  I had the pleasure of having another enthusiastic student visit my room this month!

Cultural Subjects:
At line time we count to 10 in eight different languages(English, Latin, Spanish, German, French, Greek, and Japanese).  The kindergarten students can count in English, Latin, Spanish, German, French, Greek, Japanese, and Arabic with the Lebanese dialect.  Our goal is to reach over twenty languages.

The first week of school, the kindergarten students started out learning about the these things called continents.

The children love, love, love their Music, Science, and Art classes! Their faces shine with anticipation and glee every time, yet they are also full of attention towards their teachers, and their lessons. I am also happy to be an observer in these classes.

MUSIC: In Music class the children learned words such as solo, choir, director, adagio (slow), allegro (fast). They learned about high pitch and low pitch. The children loved doing different movement activities using their own bodies, as well as scarves and musical instruments such as a maracas, tamborines, bells, egg shakers, and castanets. They also heard a beautiful piece of music by Beethoven!

SCIENCE: In Science the children did three experiments they tremendously enjoyed! These were Magically Inflating Balloon – ” Chemical Reaction” (The balloon slowly filled with “air” (carbon dioxide) from the bottle), Density – “The mass in a specified volume” (The egg in saltwater floated. The egg in freshwater sank), Density – “The difference in the weight of two objects of the same size” (When shaking the bottle it appeared to mix, but as it settled, the oil and water separated and oil rose to the top). What fun the children had!

ART: The children learned about their primary colors – red, blue and yellow, as well as their secondary colors – orange, green and purple. They love, love, love to create using the different materials provided by Ms. Michele, including paint and different colored papers. The children learned about artists such as Mondrian, Van Gogh, Beatrig Milhages, and Don Drumm, who himself is from Akron! Patterning was also a skill learned by the children this month.
Do talk to your children about all the fun, new things they have learned this month in Music, Science and Art!

Ms. Kristen’s August / September 2015 Newsletter

It has been a wonderful first month of school! I have enjoyed getting to know each and every one of the new children in our classroom, and seeing how our returning students have grown over the summer. We had lots of fun learning all about Classroom Rules, Grace and Courtesy, getting to know our friends, and all about Community Helpers. One thing Ms. Kim and I have noticed that is popular in our classroom are the reading and writing materials! We may have a bunch of future authors and journalists in our classroom!

During the first week of school, we learned all about the ground rules of the classroom. The children learned to roll and unroll a rug, how to carry a tray, how to place our work back in the place where we found it, etc. We also learned how to use Grace and Courtesy in the classroom. We also learned to say “please” and “ thank you” and to say “excuse me”. Mastering these ground rules at the beginging of the year will aid the child in mastery of other classroom materials throughout the rest of the school year.

During the second week of school, we learned all about Good Manners. We learned how to say “Please” and ” Thank you”. We learned kindness means to treat others the way we would want to be treated. The children also enjoyed playing a game where they passed a ball during Afternoon Group time. Before they could receive the ball, they had to say, ” May I please have the ball?” and, once they received the ball, the children practiced saying ” Thank you”.

20150825_074449

We learned all about each other during week three. The children enjoyed playing the ” Baby Picture Guessing Game”, where they guessed which baby picture belonged to whom. The children also discussed when their birthdays were, their favorite things, making bar graphs of our hair colors and how many boys and how many girls in our class. The children are also practicing recognizing their first and last names. We’ve also started working on learning our middle names during roll call as well.

20150827_111516

During the final week of September, we learned all about Community Helpers. The children really enjoyed learning all about those who help the community, such as firefighters, police officers, nurses, etc. We enjoyed a visit from my father, who is a retired journalist. The children learned how important it is to know what is going on in our community, and how journalists help give us that information.

20150924_082248

The children also enjoyed a visit from Liam’s godmother, Mary Beth, who is a nurse. We loved hearing all about her job as cardiac nurse and even were able to see how an AED works! She also shared with us how her husband is a firefighter, and the children were also able to try on a real firefighter’s hat!

The children were so excited to receive a visit from Dante’s father, Officer Nick! He shared with us all about the work of a police officer. He discussed how police officers help keep us safe and make sure we follow the rules. He also gave the children “badges” and had them take the “Junior Police Officer” pledge!

Music
In music class, Ms. Lisa starts off every lesson by having the children sing hello to one of her animal puppets. This month the children sang hello to Jerry the Giraffe, Ally the Alligator, Bernie the Bernard, and Nemo the Fish! One of the first concepts Ms. Lisa taught the children was fast vs. slow. The children danced slow and then fast with colorful scarves to music. The next concept the children were taught was high vs. low sounds. During a horse game, the children pretended to be horses in stables. When the high sounds were played on CD, the children played bells. When the low sounds were played on CD, the children played tambourines. To further practice high and low sounds, the children used rhythm sticks to pretend to play violins, flutes, and tubas! All this month, the children practiced singing the song “1, 2, 3…Little Indians.” They shook maracas and egg shakers, and even practiced playing an instrumental in this song.

Science
Our first science experiment involved baking soda, vinegar, and balloons. Each child took a turn shaking baking soda out of a balloon into a bottle of vinegar. When the baking soda mixed with the vinegar, the balloon filled up. We found out that when the baking soda and vinegar mixed, a gas called carbon dioxide was formed which filled up the balloon.

Our next science experiment taught us the concept of density. We took two eggs and dropped one in a cup of salt water and one in a cup of water without salt. The children made hypotheses on whether the eggs would sink or float. Each time we tried it, we found that the egg dropped in salt water floated and the egg dropped in water without salt sank. This was because the salt water was more dense than the egg and pushed the egg to the top.

Our next experiment on density involved colored water and vegetable oil. We first filled a bottle with colored water. Then we poured vegetable oil on top. The children made hypotheses on what would happen when we shook the bottle. Every time we shook the bottle, the water and oil did not mix. The oil is less dense and will always float back to the top.

Art
Ms. Michele started off the school year teaching about the artist Eric Carle. She showed the children Eric Carle’s technique of tissue paper and different textures. The children got to create their own tissue paper butterfly like Eric Carle. On the tissue paper, the children crayon rubbed different textures using different materials. When the children were done, they had some colorful butterflies filled with design!

The following week we learned about the artist Piet Mondrian. We learned that he used primary colors (red, blue, yellow), shapes, and lines to create art. The children first made houses by gluing down black strips of construction paper onto white paper. Then they painted inside the shapes of the house using the primary colors.

Next we learned about the local artist Don Drumm. We watched a video about how much of his art is around the city of Akron. We used primary colors in paint squeeze bottles. The children squeezed the paint onto plastic bags to create colorful designs. We discovered that if we mixed two primary colors together we would get a secondary color!

Finally:

I encourage you to practice with your child what they are learning in the classroom. Have them practice how to dial 911 and discuss what consitutes an emergency. Practice writing their name in cursive with them. Play “ I Spy” using initial sounds. Work with your child on memorizing their birthday.

A quote from Maria Montessori states, “ We teachers can only help the work going on, as servants wait upon a master.” It is truly my pleasure to serve your children and to be their guide, and I cannot wait to see what this year has in store for our class!

Explorations of Elementary | Week 4 & 5

Explorations of Elementary | Week 4 & 5

In the elementary classroom research is an important part of our history, language, grammar, and science curriculum. We are able to teach almost every subject through research projects. We can introduce students on how to look topics up in a dictionary (alphabetical order); how to use an index (alphabetical order); what an index and glossary are used for; how to read and find factual information versus opinions; how to decipher good information from great information; writing a bibliography (what is a bibliography and plagiarism); how to write full, interesting sentences and make a paragraph flow; how to edit a paper, checking for spelling and grammar mistakes (punctuation and spelling lessons) – just to name a few. 🙂

We have several research groups going on currently. One group is focusing on Dinosaurs. They exploring different stages scientists believe the earth has gone through and what each stage looked like. They are also learning the different types of dinosaurs, what their names mean, the habitats of dinosaurs during different time periods, and special characteristics of the different dinosaurs.

The third group will be focusing on Ancient Civilizations for the entire school year. Currently, they are learning about Ancient Mesopotamia. This group began with drawing a map of Mesopotamia, identifying current country boundaries, the 3 main areas of Mesopotamia, seas and rivers, and the area formerly known as Mesopotamia. They also started reading about the climate, history, food, clothing, and government of the time. They are compiling their information into a research paper and will give a presentation on the part they find to be the most interesting.
