This week our class focused so very hard on respect and what that word truly means. We also worked on grace and courtesy lessons. We spent a lot of time working on a lot of our ground rules for our classroom as well.

 

One of our students is working on the lowercase initial stroke pages we have in our classroom. These strokes help the child at the begining steps for cursive writing. When you think of lowercase letters you notice that all of them start and end the same way. This work helps to prepare them in this way.

 

Another one of our friends is also working on her form drawings. She is tracing the different forms on lined paper. This work also helps prepare them for cursive.

 

When working on the 100 board the children are learning linear counting, and number recognition. Our friend here is also writing out 1 to 100. This helps with fine motor skills, number formation, and also with linear counting.
One of our kindergartener’s is working on static addition with the golden beads. The purpose is for the child to understand that the process of addition is simply the combining of equal or unequal quantities to form one large quantity.

This week we learned all about Nutrition. We discussed the importance of exercise, went over My Plate and the foods you need to choose for it, the five food groups, and how to wash our hands the right way with a variety of hands on activities, songs, books, and videos.

The metal insets are used to help with pencil control, to refine hand movements in the preparation for writing. This work also helps with eye-hand coordination.
Today are friend was working on our Vertebrate and Invertebrate cards. These cards teach the child about which animal or insect has a back bone or the ones that do not. It also teaches the child about grouping and  how to place cards in the right category.
Me. Ame made a fun My Plate matching work. My Plate is the current nutritional guide that replaced the food pyramid. This plate shows children the 5 food groups that should be placed on their plate at every meal.
Weaving is such an excellent activity to bring into the classroom. Weaving not only promotes fine motor skills, but helps children learn how to create patterns and work through problems that may encounter while weaving. It can also be a beautiful way to express themselves artistically.

A Peek Into Our Week/ Ms. Kate/ October 26th, 2017

This week our class had a blast learning about spiders, bats, jack- o-lanterns, special traditions our families have for Halloween, and super fun crafts for our party!

I introduced the children to a tree map. With this activity we first read a book about spiders. We then discussed everything that spiders are, what they have, and what they can do. This activity is great for reading comprehension. We did this same activity when we learned about bats but in a different format.
This is just one of the many fun crafts that the children made with Me, they love doing personalized note cards. Ame. With each crafts they made there was a lesson that went with them. When doing a craft the children have to follow a one step direction. They also gain fine motor skills when coloring, cutting, and gluing. Crafts also gain there concentration and focusing skills, which will then help them later on with our longer more challenging works.
Our friend is working on our What does not belong work. The purpose of this work is to help prepare the student for reading. This teaches the child how to hold interest and gain their concentration skills.
Our North America map teaches the child the different counties in our continent, gains their fine motor skills, and helps with their focus and concentration.

A Peek Into Next Week

Next week is all about Nutrition. We will be learning about healthy habits, the importance of exercise, filtration water systems as Pureosmosis for better water, learning about My food plate, creating our own salad together and much much more!

Take A Peek Into Our Week/ Ms.Kate/ Week of October 16

This week our class explored everything about pumpkins. Together we labeled the parts of the pumpkin, talked about the life cycle of a pumpkin and then followed with an activity, and had a blast with our pumpkin investigation. With this activity the children had to use adjectives to describe the outside and inside of our pumpkin, measure how tall our pumpkin was with duplos, counted all the seeds, and then voted on the face we wanted for our pumpkin. It was such a fun week!

Our friend was very excited about tracing the frog puzzle for the very first time. When using our different animal puzzles the children are able to gain fine motor skills, learn the parts of  the animal, gain focus and concentration.
Syllable awareness is one component of phonological awareness. Students gain the ability to hear phonemes that comprise words and explore speech sounds as syllables.
During group time we created a chart together and brainstormed everything that pumpkins can do, what pumpkins have, and what pumpkins are. I love these types of lessons because it gives the child a chance to speak their minds, gain confidence skills, and working together as a team.
The children had so much fun with our investigation. During this activity the children were able to use their math skills by linear counting, discussing the different sizes, and also gaining knowledge of what an adjective is by using descriptive words for our pumpkin.
This week our field student gave a lesson on pumpkins. In her lesson she made a fall discovery bottle. Every child was able to participate in placing the certain objects into the bottle. She then gave a fun lesson on the different pumpkins you can find. The children had the best time!

Next week we will be having so much fun learning about bats, spiders, and getting ready for our Halloween party!

A Peek into Our Week | Ms. Kate’s Class | Week of October 9th

I truly love this time of year. The perfect smell of fall, the beautiful colors we see all around us, and all of the really fun things our class gets to talk and learn about! This week we focused on Autumn. We had a blast heading outdoors together and collecting the different kinds of leaves we saw. As a group, we discussed the different types of leaves and then sorted them into different colors and created a leaf color graph. We also learned about chlorophyll and what happens to the tree and leaves as the different seasons go by. The children were also very excited  to  explore their leaves they found with leaf rubbings. It was a fantastic week!

Here is our leaf color chart that the children made. Having the children sort and classify is helping the children organize their understanding of language, people and the objects in their environment. This process is the child’s first step into math and science!
Our two friends are working on copy writing the basket of sight words. When you copy write the children refine their fine motor skills, are able to form letters and understand the purpose from just seeing a word and now writing it on to paper. Children also feel proud and gain more confidence in themselves when they see what they can do while they are writing. It can also spark their creativity.

This week our children were able to explore the different types of leaves that they brought in. One of our lessons was leaf rubbing. This lesson provides knowledge of the different leaves, fine motor skills as they color back and forth. They also have to follow step by step directions.

A Peek into our Week | Ms. Kate’s Class | Week of October 2nd

This week we had so much fun learning all about apples. We had fun  learning about the parts of an apple, the life cycle of an apple tree, painting with apples, graphing our favorite apple, and making homemade applesauce. We had such a blast!

Our friend is working hard on the Geometry Cabinet. The purpose of this work is for the child to gain visual and tactile knowledge of the geometric forms.
Our friend is working on our picture to picture match work. This work is a pre-reading skill . Picture to picture matching also brings in deep concentration which can be very calming for a child. It also provides an opportunity to master a skill, and helps to demonstrate their knowledge in the world around them.
This week we made homemade applesauce together. The children were able to cut the apples and place all of the ingredients  into the crock pot. It was super yummy!

A Peek into Next Week:

Next week our class will be jumping into Autumn! we will have fun exploring different types of leaves, why leaves change color, having fun with leaf rubbings, fun learning new fall songs and more!

Parents this weekend will be the perfect fall weekend for a hike. Go and explore a favorite trail. While you are there try to find some colorful leaves! You are more than welcome to bring in your leaves to share!

Peek at our Week | Ms. Kate’s Class | Week of September 25th

This week we learned all about what respect is, and using our manners. Throughout the week, we had discussions about what is a peacemaker and what a peace breaker does. We also made our own classroom rules as a group. Together as a class, we also created a listening chart. I was super proud of how well the children grasped this concept!

Our friend here is working on the Geometry Cabinet. With this work the children discriminate their geometric shapes. They are also learning new vocabulary.
Our kindergartners are working on their weekly journal entries. When children are journal writing they are able to write about personal experiences, and their reflections. It also teaches children that their thoughts, feelings, and words can be transferred from their minds to paper.
This week our friend worked really hard on the trinomial cube. The purpose of the amazing material is for the preparation for mathematics, working on three dimensional patterns. This is also an introduction for algebra.

We had so much fun this week learning about our families!  All week long we had a variety of activities which  gave a better understanding of what a family is. We had many discussions about who is in our family, brothers and sisters, special traditions families celebrate together, and how all families are different. We also shared our family trees.

One of our kindergartners working on the South America Map. With this material they are learning how countries fit together into a continent and learning about the different countries. They are gaining fine motor skills but tracing and coloring the map.

A Peek at Our Week | Ms. Kate’s Class | Week of September 11th

This week we had so much fun learning about ourselves. We made different graphs that focused on the letters of our name, eye and hair color. We also lead discussions about what makes us so unique and special!

We started out the week by reading a special book about how everyone in the world is special. We then lead a discussion about what makes each of us special.

 

Our sweet friend is working very hard on the number rods. The aim and purpose for this material is to help memorize the sequence of numbers from 1 to 10, to show that each number is represented by a object, as a whole, and separate from others.

 

During our one on one time, our friend has been working super hard on his sandpaper letters. The direct purpose and aim from this amazing material is to teach the child the sounds of the alphabet by means of muscular and visual memory.

A Peek into Next Week:
Next week we will be focusing about our family. Throughout next week your child will be able to share their family tree to their classmates, create different charts about who lives in their home, and what a family is. We will also be discussing our different family tradition, and creating a family portrait.

  • Ramseyer Farm Field Trip Friday, September 22. Please make sure your child is in tennis shoes and is dressed for the weather. Please send lunches in a disposable container with disposable items. We will be unable to warm up leftovers at the farm.

A Peek at our Week | Week of September 4th

This week we focused on friendship. Throughout the week we had so much fun learning friendship songs, making a kindness quilt, learning about being a bucket filler and a bucket dipper. We also created a chart about how we can be good friends to others.

 


This week we had a lesson on cutting. The children were able to pick a shape out, color it, then cut it out. This work is great for their fine motor skills!

 


One of our friends was copying our basket of red sight words. With this activity she is gaining fine motor skills, letter recognition, and copy writing skills.


This week we welcomed a new friend☺


Literacy is super important to have in the classroom. It promotes letter and sound recognition, as well as word recognition. Reading also sparks imagination!
