This week we learned about articles.  An article modifies a noun and the three articles are “a, an, the”.  “A” hangs out with words that begin with consonants.  “An” is a bit more picky.  She hangs out with words that begin with vowels.  “The” does not care who he hangs out with.  He hangs with letters that begin with vowels and consonants.

Peek In Our Week| Mr.John’s Class | Weeks of March 18 and 25, 2019

Since last week was an abbreviated week and I caught a nasty stomach bug and was on the edge of death this blog will be a little sparse.  Next week I will resume with a normal blog. 

 

Line Time:
This week we took a look at life cycles of humans, frogs/toads, and butterflies/moths.  Humans have relatively boring life cycle compared to the butterfly/moth and toad/frog.  We are born, we live, we die. YAWWWWN.  The toad and frog start with being jelly eggs in the water.  They hatch into tadpoles and eat algae, then they turn into a froglet which has a head of a frog and a tail.  Then the tail falls off and an adult frog/toad lives the rest of its life on land.  The butterfly/moth starts as an egg.  The a caterpillar is hatched and it eats A LOT.  Then a butterfly spins its chrysalis/ moth spins a cocoon.  Then a buttery comes out of its chrysalis and moth comes out of the cocoon.  I posed the question  “which came first the egg or the butterfly?”

We had fun this week looking into the world of art.   We went over the primary and secondary colors.  We learned there are different ways to create art such as, drawing with pencils, coloring with crayons, and painting.  We looked at artists such as Michael Angelo, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol.

Peek In Our Classroom:

The ever so popular and visually appealing and engaging Pink Tower. The Pink Tower is a  the corner stone material from the Sensorial Area of the Montessori classroom. The Pink Tower, iconic to the Montessori classroom, embodies the direct and indirect purpose of most Montessori materials. Stacking the cubes calls for visual discrimination, coordination, and precision. Indirectly, a child is preparing himself or herself for understanding cubed roots in later math. Here the students are working on an extension of finding the relationship between the pink tower and brown stairs.

 

This student is working on the Ten Board and is in the second phase of this work. Phase 1 is to place the appropriate number of ten bead bars next to the number. The correlation between quantity and symbol. Phase 2 is to compose numbers by adding units. Do you see the pattern she has discovered and do you see the look of concentration on her face.

 

This student is working with the Knobless Cylinders found in the sensorial area. The purposes of this work is grading by size, to train the eye to perceive fine differences in dimensions, to recognize difference and similarities (when using more than one set), and co-ordination of movement. Do you see how she is finding the relationship of the three colors?

 

The Metal Insets are a delightful way for the child to prepare for writing. Holding a colored pencil to carefully trace shapes helps a child develop the fine motor control needed to write small letters. Creating patterns and designs is a secondary goal, but also increases a child’s ability to manipulate a pencil.

The month started off by going back in time and studying the Ancient Romans.  The Ancient Romans had similar Gods as the Ancient Greeks.  The king of all Gods in Rome was Jupiter and his wife Juno who was the Goddess of Marriage and childbirth.  Pluto was the God of the Underworld, Neptune was the God of the Seas, and finally we came across the God of War, Mars.  Did you notice that a lot of these Gods had planets named after them?

We had a Dental Hygienist visit and she discussed what is good and bad for your teeth.

 

Peek In Our Classroom:

This student is working on the Teen Board. This work focuses on the correlation between quantity and symbol of the teen numbers. Some students have difficulty identifying the number 11, 12, 13, and 15 since they do not follow the rules that 14, 16, 17, 18, 19 follow. It is not “two teen, three teen, five teen”

 

She is working on the Second Introduction to Decimals (exchanging). This gives the child the concept that 10 ones equals 1 ten, 10 tens equals a hundred, 10 hundreds equal a thousand. This also prepares the child to recognize the different columns ( unit column, ten column, hundred column, and thousand column).

 

This boy had an impromptu urge to do some house cleaning. He voluntarily started to dust the shelves. This is an example of Care of the Environment: this child became aware of the accumulation of dust and is helped to dust independently.

 

One of the great things about the Montessori materials is the extension. These extensions give the student the opportunity to revisit works. They create interesting shapes and find the relationship between two or more materials. This student discovered the relationship between the knobbed cylinders and knobbless cylinders.

Peek In Our Week ^^^ Mr. John Classroom ^^^ Week Of February 25, 2019

Line Time:
This week we went back in time and took a look at Ancient Greece and talked about Greek Mythology. The Greek Gods hung out on Mt. Olympus and we learned the King of all Gods was Zeus and if you made him angry he had a lightning bolt in his hand that he would throw at you.  Zeus had a wife named Hera and she was the Goddess of Marriage.  If you were a sailor you dare not make Poseidon angry because he was the the God of the Seas and held a trident (a fork like spear) in his hand.  Zeus had a brother that he sent to the under world and that God was named Hades.  Hades had a pet that was a three headed dog named Cerberus.  We also learned about Pan and Medusa.

                            
Greek Warrior and Wisdom Goddess Ashlie came to visit.

This is what I think about:
Sometimes I wonder the amount of weight staples and paper clips are manufactured in a year.  How is the measurement of the manufacturing of staples?  By unit (and would that unit be 1 individual staple or is a unit a sleeve or box) or by weight?  If anyone can enlighten me it will eliminate many sleepless nights.

 

Peek In Our Classroom:

Ms. Ashlie giving a presentation on the knobbed cylinders. The knobbed cylinders are the first materials to be presented in the sensorial area. They contain 4 blocks, each containing 10 cylinders with knobs, each cylinder fitting into its respective hole. The direct aim is visual discrimination. The indirect aims are preparation for writing; coordination of the fingers used to hold the pencil. Also refinement of voluntary movement. The child will be able to fit the cylinders with one precise movement. Preparation for mathematics.

 

These students are working with one of my science bins which happens to the rock bin. As you can see one student is using a magnifying glass to better see the texture of the rock.

 

This child is working on the 9 tray. He has already mastered identifying and composing numbers from 1 to 9,999. Now he is using this material for doing addition. For the sum he got 7,777. What did you get?

 

This girl is working on color box 3 which the aim is visual discrimination but she discovered what we call an extension. Montessori extension lessons offer additional experiences that increasingly become more complex and abstract than the baseline concept. She described this extension as a rainbow sun.

Peek In Our Week ~~~ Mr. John’s Class ~~~ Week Of February 18, 2019

Line Time:
We went back in time and learned about Ancient Egypt.  We learned that the leaders or kings were called Pharaohs and when a king died they used a method to preserve them called mummification.  The pharaohs that were mummified look nothing like you see at Halloween or on cartoons.  The ancient Egyptians had a a written language called hieroglyphics which incorporated symbols such as cats, humans, and other daily objects. We also learned that the ancient Egyptians were responsible for building the Great Pyramids and The Sphinx which has the body of a lion and a head of a man.

This student is working on geometry. The aim is the discrimination of form, to provide the child with the key to orient himself in the world of shapes.

 

I gave this student the responsibility of putting this set of books in order.

 

This student is working in her work binder. She is practicing her handwriting.

 

These student are working with the sound cylinders. The purpose of this work is to make the child consciously aware of sounds and to train the ear to distinguish similar sounds.
